Description

' No. 871,752- PATENTED NOV. 19, 1907.
P. GANFIELD.
LID SUPPORTER AND PRICE TAG HULDER. APPLICATION FILED FEB. 23, 1906 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK OANFIELD, OF DENVER, COLORADO, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGN- MENTS, OF THREE-FOURTHS TO ALFRED W. WEIL, ONE-EIGHTH TO NATHAN Q. TAN- QUARY, AND ONE-EIGHTH TO HAMILTON ARMSTRONG, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
LID-SUPPORTER AND PRICE-TAG HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 19, 1907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK CANFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lid-Supporters and Price- Tag Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a lid supporting device more especially intended for use in connection with cigar boxes whereby the open lid may be supported at any desired inclination.
The invention also embraces a price tag holder adapted. to occupy a conspicuous place on the front surface of the lid when raised.
My object is to provide a device of this class which shall be simple in construction, economical in cost, reliable, durable and efficient in use, and to this end the invention consists of the features hereinafter described and claimed, all of which will be fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In this drawing, Figure 1 is a front view of a cigar box equipped with my improvements showing the price tag holder in place. Fig. 2 is a view taken at right angles to Fig. 1 or in the direction indicated by arrow 2 in the last named figure. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view of the same with the price tag holder absent, its place being supplied by a small clasp adapted to engage the body of the device and hold the lid at the desired inclination. Fig. 4 is a perspective view in detail of the price tag holder. Fig. 5 is a perspective view in detail of the body of the device. Fig. 6 is a similar detail-view of the clasp employed in connection with the lid when the price tag holder is not used.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the views.
Let the numeral 5 designate the side walls, 6 the end walls and 7 the hinged lid of an ordinary cigar box.
The body 8 of the lid supporting device consists of a plate provided with a vertical slot 9 having flanges 10 and 12'extending in opposite directions in the front and rear of the slot and adapted to engage the adja cent parts of the box whereby the plate is locked against movement except in a vertical direction.
l/Vhen the device is applied the rear wall of the box enters the slot, the latter being open at the bottom and closed at the top. In this event the flange 10 engages the rear wall of the box on the inside and the flange 12 on the rear end of the adjacent end wall. The front part of the upper edge of the plate 8, is provided with a hook-shaped stop 13 adapted to engage the upper edge of one end wall of the box when the device is applied.
The upper rear portion of the edge of the plate is notched as shown at 14 to receive a lip 15 of a price tag holder 16. When this price tag holder is applied to the lid of the box and the lip 15 engages a slot 14 of the plate 8, the lid is locked in the desired position. This price tag holder is a sort of clasp having its forward member 17 longer than its rear member 18. The upper members are separated to receive the lid of the box, the price tag holder being applied to one end thereof. The rear member of the clasp is bent outwardly as shown at 19 to facilitate its application with a box lid. The forward member 17 of the price tag holder is provided with an opening 20 surrounded by a forwardly extending flange 21 which is some what beveled or rounded to make room for a price tag 22 when the same is inserted from the rear. The forward edge of the flange is slightly less in diameter than its rearward edge where it merges into the member 17, thus allowingthe free insertion of the tag but preventing it from escaping in front.
When it is not desired to use the price tag holder a small clasp 23 (see Fig. 6) may be employed. This clasp has a lip 24 adapted to enter the slots 14 of the plate 8. It also has a forward member 25 and a rearward member 26, the two members being arranged to straddle the end of the box lid in a manner similar to the use of the price tag holder. The free end of the member 26 is bent outwardly as shown at 27 to aid in applying it to the lid. The lip 24 extends slightly beyond the body of the device in order to enter the slot 14 of the plate 8.
In applying the plate 8 to the box, the plate is slid down over the upper portion of the rear wall of the box at one end so that the flanges 10 and 12 straddle the said wall and project in opposite directions from the body of the plate as heretofore explained. The price tag holder 16 or the clasp 23 as the case may be, is then applied to the end of the lid, and the device moves toward the plate until the lip of the one device or the other enters the slot 14. of the plate. The lid will then be supported in the desired position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A lid supporting device provided with a vertically disposed slot having flanges projecting in opposite directions from the slot, the flanges being integral with the plate, the upper part of the plate being provided with slots corresponding in direction to the radli of the circle in which the hinged lid of the box moves, and a clasp adapted to be applied to the end of the box lid and having a lip adapted to engage a radial slot of the plate for the purpose set forth.
2. A lid supporting device having a vertical slot open at the bottom to receive the rear Wall of a box, the upper part of the plate being provided with radially disposed slots, the forward part of the plate having a hookshaped tooth adapted to engage the upper end wall of the box when the plate is applied, and a clasp adapted to engage the lid of the box and enter a slot of the plate for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of a plate slotted to engage a wall of a box, the upper edge of the plate being provided with recesses open at the top, the said recesses being radially disposed with reference to the center of motion of the hinged lid of the box, and a tag holder adapted to be mounted on said lid and provided with means for engaging said plate, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK CANFIELD.
