7 T. A. TUGGLE LID HOLDER FOR CIGAR BOXES Filed Nov. 21, 1923 Patented Jena 2%, L925.
kl N i T E S T T E S THOMAS A. TUGGLE, OF RED VIING, MINNESOTA.
LID HOLDER FOR CIGAR BO'XES.
Application filed November 21, 1323.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS i4. Tuoenn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Red Wing, in the county of Goodhue and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lid Holders for Cigar Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to devices for holding cigar box lids in an upright or nearly upright position.
The general object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind which is very simple, may be cheaply made, and which can not become accidentally detached from the box.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which may be made by stamping and which will hold the lid of the box at a slight inclination to the vertical.
Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cigar box with my device applied thereto;
Figure 2 is a perspective view looking at the rear of the cigar box showing my device applied;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the lid holder;
Figure 4 is a. face View of the blank from which the holder is made.
Referring to these drawings, it will be seen that my device is formed from a blank of sheet metal, as illustrated in Figure 4. This blank has formed in it an l shaped slot which defines the adjacent edges of two tongues. The blank is adapted to be folded along the dotted line a and longitudinally along the dotted line I) and, when folded, provides a body portion 10, the lower end of which is formed with an outstanding lug 11 extending at right angles to the plane of the body portion. The upper part of the blank, when folded, provides a portion 12 which extends atright angles to the body portion 10 and then a portion 13 which extends parallel to the portion 10 and has the downwardly extending tongue lt This tongue 14 is bent outward and then downward so that the tongue is offset from the plane of the portion 1.3.
In the use of this device, the lid of the cigar box is inserted between the body 10 Serial No. 676,143.
and the wing 13 and the tongue 1% extends downward in front of the rear wall of the cigar box, while the body 10 extends down the back of the lid and down the back of the rear wall of the box, the tongue 14F. extending against the adjacent end wall of the box, as illustrated in Figure l. Preferably the space between the walls 13 and 10 is suflicicnt to permit the lid A of the cigar box extending upward and rearward at a slight inclination to the rear wal B of the box, and this is further permitted by the ofiset tongue M. Inasmuch as this offset tongue 14 comes down within the inside of the end wall of the box, the device would be prevented from being accidentally knocked laterally off the box, while the engagement of the tongue 14 with the side wall of the box also aids materially in holding the device in place, as if the upper portion of the lid holder be struck, the lower portion will rock on the lower end of the holder as upon a pivot and this will cause the tongue 1a to jam against the side wall of the box, and if the lower portion of the holder be struck or shifted, the wall 12 will engage against the edge of the box lid and prevent any inward movement of the holder and this will also be prevented by that portion of the tongue 14: which lies upon the upper edge of the rear wall of the box.
Thus the device is held securely in place upon the box.
As before remarked, the device may be very cheaply made and may be sold at small cost. I
I claim 1. A device for holding the lid of a cigar box in a re-arwardly inclined position, comprising a body member having one end U- shaped in cross section and adapted to be embracingly engaged upon one end edge of the cover near its connection with the box, said body being formed with an offset tongue disposable against the back of the box, said tongue terminating in a lateral lug bearing against the adjacent end of the box, and the other side of the body being formed with an angularly shaped tongue adapted to bear upon the upper edge and 1Lzpgainst the inner wall of the back of the 2. A box lid holder of the character described comprising a body having a wing extending parallel to the upper portion of the body and connected thereto along one edge of the body by a Wall, the-lower portion of the Wing having an outwardly oi-iset, depending tongue, the lower portion of the body having it tongue disposed below 5 the first named tongue and extending at right angles to the inner face of the body;
3. A box lid holder of the character described formed to provide a lid-engaging portion, a back Wall engaging portion ha ving-a tongue adapted to extendoutside of and engage th'e end "wail of the :box, the
lid-engaging portion of the box being formed to embrace the lid and engage on the inside face ofthe rear Wall of the box adjacent the corner thereof.
In testimony whereof I hereuto afiix my signature. V V
