Description

HARRY L. HUDSON, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.-
Patented Aug. 9, 1910.
Application filed May 16, 1906. Serial No. 317,076.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY L. IIUDsoN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, in the city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
It has been a common objection to sheet metal boxes in which the walls of the body portion and the cover hinged thereto are formed by bending the metal and not soldering the corners, that the walls of the cover which overlap the walls of the body portion will be forced outwardly by undue pressure on the box and thus so securely bind the body portion and Cover together that it makes it extremely difficult for the cover to be opened.
The object of my invention is to provide a very simple and inexpensive means for causing the overlapping` walls of the body portion and cover to be interlocked when the box is closed for absolutely preventing` the walls of the cover from spreading when the box is subjected to undue strain.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a sheet metal box in front elevation with the cover partway open, the particular box shown therein being one which is fitted for use as an inking pad container, Fig. 2 is a vertical section from front to rear taken in the plane of the line rfi-A of Fig. l, Fig. 3 is a view in front elevation of the box when closed, Fig. t is a vertical section from front to rear taken in the plane of the line B-B of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a detail horizontal section taken in the plane of the line C-C of Fig. 3.
The sheet metal box is shown as comprising a body portion l and a hinged cover 2, the front, back and side walls of the body portion and cover being formed by `bending the metal upwardly. The front wall of the body portion is denoted by 3, the side walls by 4L and the back wall by 5. The front wall of the cover is denoted by 6, its side walls by 7 and its back wall by 8. The back walls 5 and 8 of the body portion and cover are hinged together as shown at 9. The walls of the body portion l of the box are bent to form a seat 10 for the overlapping walls of the cover.
The overlapping walls of the cover and body portion when the box is closed are interlocked to prevent the cover from spreading when undue strain is applied thereto. The means which I have shown for preventing the walls of the cover from spreading consists in providing the front wall of the body portion with one or more slots 1l through its seat and providing the front wall of the cover with one or more prongs l2 depending therefrom which are fitted to enter the said slot or slots when the box is closed. This arrangement will elfectually prevent the front walls of the body portion and cover of the box from being pressed beyond their' natural position when the box is closed even though great pressure be applied to the cover.
By providing interlocking means between the overlapping walls of the body portion and cover of the box I am enabled to provide a sheet metal box which may be made very cheaply by bending the metal blanks to form the walls of the body portion and cover without the necessity of soldering the corners thus rendering the box suitable for use when a very inexpensive one is desired as, for instance, a box for containing an ink pad.
What I claim is A sheet metal box comprising a body portion and a cover, said body portion having its walls bent to form a seat for the overlapping walls of the cover, a slot through the said seat in the front wall of the body portion, and a rigid prong depending from and in the same plane with the front wall of the cover arranged to enter the said slot and be housed within the box when .the box is closed, for preventing the cover from spreading.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two witnesses, this eleventhv day of May, 1906.
