CAKE-TURNER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR F. ELKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ironto-n, in the county of Lawrence and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cake-Turners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cake turners, and more particularly to that type in which the blade is to be moved to turn the cake, being cooked, through the medium of a device carried by or constituting a part of the handle.
It is one aim of the invention to so construct the blade turning means that in order to actuate the same it will only be necessary to compress the handle, the provision of an actuating finger piece for this purpose being obviated.
A further aim of the invention is to pro vide means for preventing the oscillatory blade shank moving to such position as to cause the parts to bind and prevent turning of the blade when the handle is compressed For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of the cake gturner embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View in detail through a portion of the cake turner. Fig. 8 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar view on the line 4% of Fig. 2.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.
In the drawing the handle of the device is indicated in general by the reference numeral 1 and at its forward end is provided with a forwardly projecting bracket 2 terminating in a sleeve bearing 3. The attaching portion of this bracket is indicated by the numeral 4: and is in the form of a depending ear secured to the forward end of the handle 1.
The blade of the cake turner is indicated by the numeral 5 and the shank thereof is indicated by the numeral 6. The shank is cylindrical in cross-section and is fitted for oscillating movement in the sleeve 3 and has bearing through the ear 4; as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The said blade shank is formed at a point between its Specification of Letters Patent.

portion which has bearing in the ear 4 and its portion which has bearing in the sleeve 3 with a crank 7 which normally projects downwardly at an angle, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The handle 1 is formed from a length of resilient bar metal bent to form a depending ear 8 to which the ear 4 is secured by welding or otherwise, and this bar 1s bent upon itself as at 9 so as to form an upper portion 10 and a lower portion 11 spaced therefrom and extending normally substantially parallel thereto.
The forward end of the portion 11 is bent to form an upwardly projected car 12. This ear 12 is formed with a slot 13 which receives the crank 7. Riveted or otherwise secured upon the rear end of the shank 6 of the blade, or more specifically, upon that portion of the shank rearwardly of the portion which has bearing in the ear 1, is an ear 1 1 provided with a stop-lug 15 which normally abuts against the under side of the portion 10 of the handle at the fold between the said portion and the ear 8. At this point it will be understood that the handle being resilient, the portion 11 has a tendency to move away from the portion 10 of the handle and in doing this pulls upon the crank 7 so as to so rock the shank .6 as to position the blade in a plane substantially parallel to the planes occupied by the portions 10 and 11. The movement of the said portion 11 of the handle and the oscillation of the shank 6 are limited by the engagement of the stop-lug 15 beneath the portion 10, as will be apparent from inspection of the Figs. 3 and a of the drawing, and it will be readily understood by referring to these figures that the crank 7 normally assumes an inclined position so that when the portion 11 of the handle is pressed in the direction of the portion 10, upward swinging .movement of the crank 7 will be assured. In other words, this crank is prevented from assuming a vertical position. It will of course be apparent, that the upper and lower walls of the slot 13 ride against the crank and serve, as the forward end of the portion 11 of the drawing is moved up and down, to oscillate the crank in a corresponding direction and thereby turn the shank 6 of the blade 5 so as to cause this blade to assume a position parallel to the plane occupied by the portion 10 of the handle or a plane at right angles thereto.
From the foregoing description of the invention it will be apparent that there is provided a device of the type mentioned which is simple in its construction, not liable to get out of order, and which may be readily manipulated by merely compressing the handle to turn a cake taken up upon the blade 5 Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is 1. A cake turner, comprising a handle having spaced portions yieldably connected, and a blade having a shank mounted for oscillation upon one of the said handle portions and provided with a crank, the other said handle portion being formed at its free end with a slot receiving crank, the walls of the slot being arranged to cooperate with the said crank when the last mentioned handle portion is moved, whereby to oscillate the shank.
2. A cake turner, comprising a handle having spaced portions yieldably connected, a blade having a shank mounted for oscillation upon one of the said handle portions and provided with a crank, operative connection between the other said handle portion and the crank of the shank arranged to oscillate the shank when the last said handle portion is moved, and means for limiting the oscillatory movement of the shank to normal position whereby to normally position the crank beyond dead center.
3. A cake turner, comprising a handle having spaced portions yieldably connected, a blade having a shank mounted for oscil lation upon one of said portions and provided with a crank and with an abutment lug arranged to engage against the first said handle portion whereby to limit the oscillatory movement of the blade-shank), and operative connection between the other blade portion and the said crank arranged to oscillate the shank when the last said portion is moved.
4. A cake turner comprising a handle having connected relatively yieldable portions, one of the said portions being provided with an upstanding slotted ear and the other said portion having spaced bearings between which the ear projects, and a blade having a shank rotatably mounted in the bearings and provided with a crank extending through the slot in the said ear.
