Description

PATBNTED JAN. 10, 1905.
No. 779,455. W. T. WILLITS.
TICKET 0R CHECK HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 22, 1904. I
[TNESSES A Manley Patented January 10, 1905.
WILLIAM T. WILLITS, OF BURLINGTON, IOWA.
TICKET OR CHECK HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 779,455, dated January 10, 1905. Application filed June 22, 1904. Serial No. 213,681.
To ztZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. VVILLITs, of Burlington, in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ticket or Check Holders; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in ticket or check holders, the object being to provide a simple and inexpensive device for supporting tickets, checks, and the like whereby the outer or exposed tickets or checks may be easily and quickly separated at their upper ends from the others and removed without disarranging the remaining tickets or checks in the holder.
A further object is to so arrange the holder that the upper or outer ends of the tickets or checks are arranged in the are of a circle, so that the outer tickets or checks project slightly above the ones next following, thus permitting the end tickets or checks to be easily separated from the others and grasped by the fingers.
WVith these objects in view my invention consists in certain novel features in construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a View in perspective of my improved holder. Fig. 2 is a view in vertical section of same. Fig. 3 is a viewin section, taken at right angles to Fig. 2;, and Fig. 4is a perspective view of a modified form of holder, one side member 2 thereof being removed.
1 represents a holder provided with a bottom curved in the are of a circle and with upwardly-extending side flanges 2 2, adapted to engage the side edges of the tickets or checks and prevent lateral displacement of the same. Rigidly secured to the inner or concaved face of the bottom of holder 1 is a U-shaped spring 3. The base of this spring is curved to conform to the curvature of the concaved bottom of the holder, upon which it is seated, while the upwardly projecting upon which it rests and is secured.
members 4 4 thereof are bent slightly inwardly and are adapted to embrace the entire series of tickets or checks and rest in contact with and exert pressure upon the outeror exposed tickets or checks 5.
By making the base of the holder curved throughout its length, as described and shown, it will be seen that when the checks or tickets are seated thereon the upper edges of said tickets or checks will conform to the curva ture of the holder, thus bringing the upper edges of the outer or exposed tickets or checks slightly higher than the adjacent tickets or checks, whereby the upper edge of the outer ticket or check can be readily engaged by the fingers and separated sufliciently to permit it to be readily grasped and removed by the conductor or other person using the holder. As the checks or tickets are withdrawn from the holder the free ends of the spring-clamp engage the next adjacent tickets or checks and lock the entire batch within the holder, and so on until allthe tickets or checks have been removed.
In the modified form of holder shown in Fig. 4 the bottom thereofis made in the form of an obtuse angle and the clamping-spring instead of being constructed from a single piece of suitable spring metal is preferably made in two parts, the base of each of said parts being bent to conform to the inclination of that portion of the bottom of the holder It is apparent that by thus forming the bottom of the holder the tickets or checks will be supported in the manner above explained.
In filling or refilling a holder with checks or tickets it is desirable that the clamping members of spring 3 be held against movement in either direction, and more particularly in an inward direction, and to this end I have provided loops 6 6 at the free ends of spring 3 for the reception of the bent ends of rod 8,
thus maintaining the clamping members of the spring in a fixed position whereby the tickets or checks are more readily and quickly introduced within the holder than would be the case were no means employed for maintaining the clamping end or members of spring 3 in a fixed separated position. After the holder has been filled the rod 8 is removed and the clamping members 4c of spring 3 are pressed tightly against the outer or exposed tickets or checks and yieldingl y lock the entire lot securely in the holder.
As tickets or checks can be removed from either end of the holder, it is apparent that different kinds of tickets or checks may be supported in the same holder, one kind to be removed from one end and the other from the opposite end.
It is evident that changes in the construction and relative arrangement of the several parts might be made without avoiding my invention, and hence I would have itunderstood that I do not restrict myself to the particular construction and arrangement of parts shown and described; but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A ticket-holder comprising a base having its ticket-supporting face sloping downwardly from both ends toward the center and springactuated means projecting from said base in position to engage the respective end tickets of a package of tickets supported on said base.
2. A ticket or check holder comprising a base having its bottom formed in the are of a circle and swing-actuated means projecting from said bottom and operating to engage the tickets or checks at respective ends of the holder, and press them toward each other in a direction at right angles to said base.
3. A ticket or check holder comprising a base provided with upwardly-extending flanges at its longitudinal edges and having a bottom curved in the arc of a circle, and spring-actuated means projecting from the ends of said bottom to engage the tickets or checks at respective ends of the holder.
4. A ticket or check holder comprising a base provided with upwardly extending side flanges and having a bottom curved in the arc of a circle, and a U-shaped spring rigidly secured to said base, the clamping members of which are adapted to receive and support between them the checks or tickets.
5. A ticket or check holder comprising a supporting-base, clamping members located to receive the tickets or checks between them and a rod for temporarily holding said clamping members in a [ixed extended position.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specilicatlon in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
