Be it known that I, LoUIs Pnnor'rr, a subject of the King of Italy, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to corsets, and more particularly corsets to be worn by women in pregnancy; and its object is to remove the drawbacks found with the corsets at present in use. The greatest fault of all corsets hitherto used is that the same while supporting the shape to the figure have an injurious effect upon the health of the wearer, as when being tightly applied to the body it presses upon the abdomen and hinders the digestion. These means, consisting of buttons and eyes or the like, are such that when the upper eyes and buttons of the corset are engaged and the upper part of the corset is thus closed they will easily become unlocked when the lower eyes and buttons are being locked. It is often very tiresome work to close the corset and keep the upper part thereof closed while the lower is being locked. The buttons, known as patent buttons, used for the nursing part of the corset prove also unsatisfactory, as the eyes engaging the buttons soon wear out and fail to lock the buttons, so that this part of the corset will unintentionally open.

In they present invention all these evils are remedied in a manner to be hereinafter specitied, and in order to make my invention more clear the same is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which similar numerals denote similar parts, and in which- Figure 1 is an elevational front view of the corset. Fig. 2 shows a'rear view of the locking device of the corset in locked position. Fig. 3, a front view thereof in the same position; Fig. 4, a front or top view of one part of the locking device; Fig. 5, a cross-section through the same; Fig. 6, a similar view of the other part of the locking device, and Fig. 7 a cross-section through the same.

Referring to the drawings, numeral 1 indicates the corset, 2 being its rear and 3 its front part. Essentially the corset is arranged similarly to those hitherto in use, the same consisting of two symmetrical sections laced together at the back and stiffened by steel or whalebone. As seen from the drawings, the front parts of the two sections of the corset are cut off, the out being made from the lower ends of the back of the sections to the front ends thereof in a curved line. Owing to this arrangement, the corset will cover only the thorax, (chest,) while the abdomen will be exposed, so that this corset could be worn without causing any pressure upon the stomach of the wearer and also and particularly by women in pregnancy and will serve its purpose to support the shape to the figure.

The locking means of the corset consist of metal strips 4L5, applied to the front ends of the corset-sections in the usual way. ()ne of these strips, 5, is provided with recesses 6 at suitable intervals stamped through them, and the outer wall 9 of said recesses 6 is pressed outward, as shown in Fig. 7 and the other strip, 4, is provided with tongues 7 having rounded ends and being slightly bent outward and inward, as shown in Fig. 5. Said tongues 7 have projections or catches 8 at their inner side adapted to engage the front edge of the recesses 6 when the tongues 7 are passed through the latter, the outer surface of the tongues leaning in closed position against the outwardly-pressed rear wall of the recesses, and thus securing them in locked position.

It will be seen that in order to lock the parts it is only necessary to raise the part of the corset bearing the strip 4 a little above the part bearing the strip 5 and move both these parts toward each other, so that all tongues will simultaneously enter the recesses and their catches be engaged by the edges of the outer wall of the recesses 6. In order to unlock these parts, it is necessary to turn the part 4 a little forward and then move both parts away from each other.

The folding parts 10, serving for the nursing of an infant, may have also this locking device in lieu of the buttons generally used herefor, whereby an unintentional opening of these parts 10 will be obviated. For this purpose the parts provided with the tongues 7 and catches 8 are attached to the inner surface of the folding parts 10, and corresponding recesses are made in the strips 4 5, adapted to engage the tongues 7 and catches 8.

It is obvious that the above-described locking means may be used independently of the new shaped corset with all other corsets hitherto on the market without departing from the spirit of my invention.

What I desire to secure by Letters Patent In combination with a corset comprising two sections laced together at the back, of means for closing the front ends of said two sections of the corset, said means consisting of a strip of suitable material attached to the front end of one section and having recesses, the parts of the strip adjacent to the inner edges of the recesses being pressed outward to project beyond the plane of the outer edge of the recesses, and a corresponding strip attached to the front end of the other section and being provided with tongues adapted to engage the said recesses, the said tongues being bent outward, downward, and inward, and having catches on their inner surfaces to engage the outer edges of the recesses, substantially and for the purpose as specified.
