SHERWOOD B; FERRIS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN COR'SETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,159, dated October 26, 1875; application filed September 2, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,-SHERWoon B. FERRIS, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Oorset, of which the following is a specification Figure l is a front view of my improved Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of one portion thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre-- sponding parts in both figures.
This invention has for its object to produce a corset which shall be adjustable, on top and bottom, to fit its wearer. under all conditions of life.
The invention consists in the application of triangular flaps to certain slits in the upper and lower parts of corset, and in their combination with adjustable fastenings, all as hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawing, the letter A represents the bodice or corset of suitable material, size, and shape. The upper part of the corset has two slits, a a, cut into it, one opposite each breast. The edges of each slit, if closed and sewed together, would make the corset perfect and of about medium size. At or near one edge of each slit,'a, is stitched thereto a flap, b, of triangular form, which, at
' its upper, free corner, has a button-hole or hook, d. To the face of the corset are fast- .ened a series of buttons or eyelets, e e, which are placed in the arc of a circle, that is described from the lower end of the flap b as a center. When the corset is to be made wider on top, each flap b is buttoned to one of the nearest buttons or fasteners 6, whereby the slit a is held Wide open, but covered by the flap b. When the corset is to be contracted on top, each flap b is buttoned to one of the farthest fasteners or buttons 0, whereby the slit (1 may be either just closed or its edges caused to overlap for still greater contraction. The corset will also be well adapted to nursing, as the flaps b b are readily openedand closed. The lower part of the corset has also two slits, that are covered by triangular flaps ff, in substantially the same manner as the slits a are covered by the flaps b, excepting that the lower flaps are reversed in position, as shown in Fig. 1. For the fastening of each lower flap a series of buttons or eyelets, g g,
. is also applied in the arc of a circle, described from the upper point of the flap, as indicated in the drawings. In place of the buttons and button-holes, or of'the hooks and eyelets, other fastening devices may be employed on the flaps, such as straps and buckles, or others.
It will be observed that by my invention every lady will be enabled to use the same corset before, during and after nursing, as the corset can be adjusted around the hips and breasts.
I claim as my invention- 1. The corset having a series of buttons, 6 e, in a line parallel with its upper edge, 'in combination with the triangular flaps b b, of which each has a single button-hole, at, near its free corner, substantially as set forth.
2. The adjustable corset, slit at the upper and lower edges, and CO lIfblIld with the triangular flaps b b and Lf, and their adjustable fasteners e e d and? g, substantially as specifled- V S. B. FERRIS.
