CORSET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 756,111, dated March 29, 1904.

Application filed June 16 1903.

To aZZ whom, it may concern:

some extent as an abdominal supporter; and

it consists in a corset formed with a lower abdominal supporting portion and an upper corset, the bust portion closing at its lower part over the abdominal supporter.

Theinvention also consists in a corset formed integral at the back and severed transversely as it approaches the front, the lower portion being capable of acting as an abdominal supporter, while the upper portion folds over the same and secures a straight front to the form.

It also consists in certain other novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved corset, showing one-half of the upper portion thereof turned backwardly to reveal the manner in which the abdominal supporting portion is attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the corset in its closed condition. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section passing through the front and rear portions of said corset.

This corset is designed to supply the need for a device which, acting to a great extent as an abdominal supporter and enabling corpulent people especially to compress or draw in the abdomen, at the same time by means of the upper portion of the corset secures the appearance of a straight front.

In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated a practical embodiment of the invention, in which is shown a corset 1, which is Serial No. 161,752. (No model.)

provided with the usual lacing 2 at the back for adjusting the fit and tightness of a corset and which is open at the front. The lower portion of the corset 3 is separated at the front from the upper or bust portion 4:, while the lower portion of the bust part 4 laps over to a considerable degree the lower abdominal portion 3. At the rear the abdominal portion 3 extends to the rear busks or lacing 2,

so as to draw directly upon the same. The outer or bust portion i also extends to the rear busks or lacing 2, so as to pull upon the same directly, as does the abdominal portion. The lower edge of the bust portion 4 and the upper edge of the abdominal portion 3 are preferably secured together for a short distance from the rear lacing of the corset, as shown at 5, though the parts may, if desired, be separated from front to rear without departing in the least from the spirit of the invention. The abdominal portion 3 is properly shaped to fit upon the hips and abdomen of the wearer and at the front is preferably formed with suitable eyelets and a lacing-cord, as at 6, so that the said abdominal portion may be adjusted to draw in and compress the abdomen of the wearer to a suitable or desired extent. This, it will be observed, can be done independently of the fastening of the upper or bust portion of the corset. The upper or bust portion is preferably formed with ordinary corset-fasteners, as 7, carried by busks secured in the material of the corset at the front .edges thereof in the usual manner. As-heretofore intimated, the front portion of the bust part 4 preferably projects downwardly from the sides of the corset a considerable distance from the abdominal portion 3. v

In putting on the corset the wearer first adjusts the abdominal portion, making it snug or as loose as desired, and then the front of the bust portion. is drawn together and fastened, the lower end thereof lying over the greater portion of the front part of the abdominal portion 3. By reason of the fact that the bust portion 4 is separated from theabdominal band or lower portion 3 at least to the sides of the corset, if not entirely around the same, the securing of the said upper portion over the lower portion after it has been adjusted is facilitated.

The abdominal band may, if desired, be folded over the lower front end of the bust portion without departing from the spirit of the invention; but it is preferable to place the bust portion outside the abdominal band, as shown and above described, for there is less likelihood of the parts being puckered or bunched one beneath the other, and, moreover, the fastening of the front busks of the upper bust portion over the abdominal portion 3 after it has been adjusted in position makes it possible to secure the effect of astraight front for the wearer. The device is especially well adapted for the use of corpulent people and makes it possible for such persons to attain a neat and stylish form, and yet with comfort to the wearer of the corset. It will be observed that the pull both of the abdominal portion 3 and the upper bust portion f the corset is directly upon the lacing at the rear of the corset, making one portion to a great extent independent of the other, and yet both working eonjointly for producing the desired effect.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A corset comprising a lower abdominal portion and an upper portion, the said upper portion extending only to the upper edge of the lower abdominal portion at the rear but extending downwardly below the upper edge of the said abdominal portion at the front.

2. A corset provided with a lower abdominal supporting portion extending from the rear fastenings of the corset to the front fastenings thereof, an upper bust-inclosing portion secured at its lower edge at the rear to the upper edge of the abdominal supporting portion, the said bust-inclosing portion having a downwardly-extending projection at the front overlapping the front portion of the abdominal supporting portion.

3. A corset comprising a lower abdominal supporting portion extending from the rear fastening of the corset unbrokenly to the front, an upper bust-inclosing portion extending unbrokenly from the rear of the corset to the front, the upper edge of the abdominal portion being connected with the lower edge of the bust portion at the rear while the front of the bust portion extends downwardly over the front of the lower portion.

4. A corset comprising an upper bust-inelosing portion and a lower abdominal supporting portion, both portions extending unbrokenly from the front fastening of the corset to the rear fastening thereof and a front downwardly-extendingportion formed upon the bust-inclosing portion, the said portion being curved downwardly toward the sides of the corset to the front and not interfering with the relative adjustment of the parts.
