CORSET.
N0. 446,968. Patented Feb. 24,1891.
I I I UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDIVARD C. FOSTER, OF LUDINGTON, MICHIGAN.
CORSET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 446,968, dated February 24, 1891. Application filed November 22, 1890. Serial No. 372,310. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD C. Fosrnn, a
V citizen of the United States, residing at Ludington, in the county of Mason and State of Michigamhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the' art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in corsets; and it has for its objects among others to provide an improved corset adapted to be worn more especially by fleshy people, which will serve also as an abdominal supporter, and also crowd downtand back the soft flesh on the hips and greatly improve the figure.
The novelty in the present instance resides in the peculiarities of construction of the corset, as will be more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the let ters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved corset. Fig. 2 is an insideviewof onehalf thereof.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in both views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the corset, formed of two like parts, and as each half is a duplicate of the other a description of one-half will suffice for both. Each half is formed of proper shape, as is usual in this class of articles of apparel, being made of any desired material and formed with pockets in which the stays are retained, as usual. At the proper places, where they will coincide with the breasts, I form bulges or enlargements a, as shown, the material being stitchedvertically and at an angle through the vertical center of these to make them retain their shape. The two parts are laced together at the back by means of lacings B, passed through suitable holes or eyelets b in the adjacent edges of the two parts. I provide a flexible stay or steel at these adjacent edges, as shown at (3. At the bottom of each half I attach an elastic gore D, which may be of any desired width, preferably about five inches at its widest point. It is secured to the lower edge of the two halves in any suitable manner, preferably by stitching. 'At the front edges of the two halves are the steels E, of any approved form, and which terminate above the elastic portion, as shown. jacentfrout edges of the elastic lower portion are provided \VlLh hooks and eyes 0 or other equivalent means of fastening. To the inside of the corset, and extended from near the top to the bottom, are attached suitable flexible stays F, of, say, whalebone, being seated in suitable pockets, if desired. These serve to prevent too great stretching of the elastic portion and to assist in keeping the shape of the gored portion. A corset thus constructed will be found very desirable for fleshy people. The elastic portion will serve as an abdominal supporter, and will crowd down and push back the soft flesh on the hips and greatly improve the figure of the wearer.
I am aware that it has been proposed to provide a corset with an elastic band around its lower edge, and hence do not seek to cover such, broadly, but restrict myself to my particular construction, attaching importance to the stays F, which are arranged in pockets in the corset-s, and elastic strips substantially midway between the front and rear steels, one upon each half of the corset. These stays serve to prevent bagging of the elastic strip or band, as it would be apt to do if left unsupported for its entire length.
hat I claim as new is A corset having front and rear steels and an elastic band along its entire lower edge, the front steels terminating at the band and the rear steels extending across the band to its lower edge, and a vertically-disposed stay F, located between said front and rear steels and extending across the band, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD O. FOSTER.
