To all whom t may concern.:

Be it known that I, VVILHELMINA S. GUTsoHow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New-York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets, of which the following is a specication.

The object of this invention is to pro- Vide a new and improved form of corset.

Another object of the invention is to better provide a support for the abdomen and avoid the downward pull on the abdomen that is ordinarily present due to the support of the stockings by the elastics.

This and other objects of the invention will be fully illustrated in the drawings, described in the specification and pointed out in the claims at the end thereof.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete corset in place.

Figure 2 is a perspective view of the corset partly open with a surgical belt added thereto.

In the drawings like reference numerals indicate like parts.

In the drawings, reference numeral 1 indicates the body of thek corset which is composed of two halves 2 and 3 which halves are joined together at the back by the lacing 4 and at the front by the row of hooks 5 and row of eyes 6. The body of the corsetv is also provided with upright ribs as indicated at 7 8, 9, and l0.

The body of the corset is closed at the front at the top by the upper or straight sections 11 and 12 which can be integral with the remainder of the body of the corset and the triangular sections 13 and 14. In the upper sections 11 and 12 the grain of the cloth runs straight up and down and these sections are therefore referred to as straight sections and in the triangular sections 13 and 14 the grain of the cloth runs diagonally parallel to the diagonal meeting edges or seams b which the upper sections 11 and 12 are astened to the triangular pieces 13 and 14.

The sections 11 and 13 and 12 and 14 do not overlap except sufficiently to form a seam. The row of hooks 5 is carried on a piece ofheavy braid 19-01# any similar support that extends continuously from the top of the straight section 11 to the bottom of the triangular section 13 and in like manner elastics and stockings are supported from the corset.-

The front of the corset is closed at the top by the sections 11 and 12 and at the. bottom by the triangular sections 13 and 14 all of which sections are part of the body of the corset.

19 and 20 for the hooks and eyes overlap the body of the corset by a considerable area and add to the support which the corset gives to the abdomen.

It will be seen that the downward pull of the elastics due to the support of the right hand stocking is supported entirely from the left hip while the downward pull of the elastics, which support the left stocking is supported entirely by the right hip and in thls way the hips take all of the load and there is no downward pull on the abdomen but on the contrary there is an inward thrust on the abdomen due to the diagonal tension on the triangular sections 13 and 14 and the overlapping of the sections.

The triangular sections may be reinforced by the stiffening ribs 21 and 22 which run diagonally as shown by dotted lines in Figure 1.

In Figure 2 I have shown an addition to the corset shown in Figure 1 in the nature of a surgical bandage in which 23 and 24 indicate flaps which are stitched to the body of the corset which support between them a bandage 25.V This bandage `is attached to the flap 24 by the lacinff 26 and to the fia 23 by the hooks and eyes 27 and the ban( age may be stiffened by the

28, 28 four of which are shown in dotted lines. Otherwise the corset shown in Figure 2 is the same as that showninFigure 1. Provision is made. for raising thev bandage 25u15 Hor down, extra. eyelets being provided above and below the bandage on each of the flaps as shown in Figure 2 the flaps bein made longer up `and down than is the ban age.

I claim:

1. A corset having in the front thereof on each side thereof a narrow upper straight section each section having a horizontall top and a. bottom that tapers downward to the middle of the corset and a wide triangular section fastened to the bottom of the straight section by a seam, said triangular sections overlapping at the bottom and having elastic stocking supports attached thereto, the grain'of the cloth in the upper sections running up and down and in the triangular sections running down and across the corset, said triangular sections having stifening ribs that extend diagonally following the straight grain of the material.

2. A corset having'in the front thereof on each side thereof a narrow upper straight section each section having a horizontal top and a bottom that tapers downward to the middle of the corset and a wide triangular section fastened to the bottom of the straight section by a seam, said triangular sections `overlapping at the bottom, upright flaps fastene to the inside of the corset on each side thereof, a bandage extending across the front of the corset between said flaps the front sections of said corset closing over said bandage said bandage having horizontal stiffening ribs therein.

3. A corset having in the front thereof on each side thereof a narrow upper straight section each section having a. hori zontal top and a bottom that tapers downward to the middle of the corset and a wide triangular section fastened to the bottom of the straight section by a seam, said triangular sections overlapping at the bottom, upright flaps fastened to the inside of the corset on each side thereof, a bandage extending across the front of the corset between said flaps and being laced to one of said flaps and hooked to the other of said flaps, said bandage having horizontal stifening ribs therein.

4. A corset having in the front thereof on each side thereof a narrow upper straight section each section having a horizontal top and a bottom that tapers downward to the middle of the corset and a. wide triangular section fastened to the bottom of the straight section by a seam, said triangular sections overlapping at the bottom, upright flaps fastened to the inside of the corset on each side thereof, a' bandage extending across the front of the corset between said flaps and being laced to one of said flaps and hooked to the other of said fiaps, said bandage being adjustable up or down between said flaps, said bandage havingr horizontal stiffening ribs therein.

5. A corset having in the front thereof on each sidethereof a narrow upper straight. section, each sect-ion having a horizontal top and a bottom that tapers downward to the middle of the corset, and a wide triangular section fastened to the bottom of the straight section by a seam, said triangular sections overlapping at the bottom, the grain of the cloth 1u the upper sec-tions running up and down in the triangular sections running down and across the corset, said triangular sections havingv sti'ening ribs that extend diagonally ollowing the straight grain of the material, stockinv suspender means only attached to the le t. triangular section to support the right stocking and stocking suspender means only attached to the right triangular section to support the left stocking, the pull of the stockings being adapted to draw the triangular sections crosswise over the abdomen.
