. CLASP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 773,979, dated November 1, 1904. Application led March 2, 1904. Serial No. 196,161. (No model.)
the same.
My invention relates to clasps for supporting garments.
It has for its object to support the drawers by clasping their upper edge to the upper edg'e of the trousers, thus holding the two garments together as one, which is very convenient in dressing and prevents the drawers from sagging' at the back, causing' discomfort and baclache.
The invention consists in a clasp made of sheet metal or wire having astraight portion, a portion bent upward at an angle to said straight portion, thence bent sharply downward, forming a tooth substantially perpendicular to and resting upon said straight portion, and thence bent upward again, forming an inlet for the insertion of the edges of the garments.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating' the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure l is a perspective view of a clasp made of sheet metal in accordance with my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are side and plan views of a clasp made of wire, and Figs. 4 and 5 are perspective views of modiiied forms of wire clasps.
Referring' more particularly to the drawings, the clasp shown in Fig. l is made with a straight portion 9., a portion 3 bent upward and forward from said straight portion, a downwardly-bent portion 4 substantially perpendicular to the straight portion, which in turn is bent upward and forward, as at 5, leaving' a tooth 6 resting upon said straight portion and adapted to bite upon the edg'es of the materials which are inserted between the portions l and Vhen made of wire, the same form is followed by the two strands of wire, which may be looped in front of the lower portion, as at 7, Figs. 3 and 4, or at the front of the upper portion 8, Figs. 3 and 5,01' they may be looped at both points, as in Fig. 3. An advantage of the wire clasp over the sheet-metal one is that there are two separate teeth to bite upon the material, which act independently of each other. The upward and forward bend from the straight portion is preferably rounded to provide more space for the edges of the garments.
The usual custom at the present time is to fasten loops of tape to the upper edge of the undergarment at each side, through which loops the ends of the Suspenders are passed to support said garment. The disadvantages of this arrangement are that the two garments are not held close enough together, there being too much play between them, and there is no means of securing' them together at the back. By the use of my simple device these objections are avoided. The clasp can be placed at any desired intervals both front and back. They are slipped on with the straight portion out land when in place the material spreads above the teeth, clasping the two garments securely together.
It will be easily understood that chang'es in detail may be made in my invention without departing from the spirit or sacriiicing the advantages of my invention. I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A device of the character described, comprising a straight portion, a portion bent upward and forward from said straight portion and thence bent sharply downward substantially perpendicular to said straight portion and upward and forward again at an angle to said straight portion leaving a tooth adapted to bite upon material inserted into the clamp and preventing its premature withdrawal.
2. A device of the character described made of two strands of metal looped in front and each comprising a straight portion, a portion bent upward and forward from said straight In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
