Be it known that I, OLIVER W. HULL, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Battlecreek, county of Calhoun, Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Dress-Shields, of which the following is a specification.

My invention contemplates an improved dress-shield arrangement involving a bandlike holder of non-waterproof material which can be placed around the person just below the arms and to which a couple of ordinary waterproof dress-shields are removably secured by separable buttons or other suitable fastening devices.

Generally stated, the object of my invention is to provide a simple, comparatively cheap, and highly-efficient dress-shield of the foregoing character.

A special object is to provide an improved arrangement whereby the shields can be easily attached to and detached from the holder or body portion of the garment, so as to make it possible to replace the shields with new ones when worn out, thereby making it unnecessary to throw away the entire garment when the shields become worn or impaired by usage.

Another object is to combine in a dressshield arrangement of this character the features of detachability of the shields and of ventilation between the waterproof tissue and the body of the wearer.

It is also an object to provide certain details and features of improvement tending to increase the general efficiency and serviceability of a dress-shield arrangement of this particular character.

To the foregoing and other useful ends my invention consists in matters hereinafter set forth and described.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective of a dress-shield arrangement characterized by my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the holder or body portion of the said dress-shield arrangement, the shields being detached or removed. Fig. 3 is a view of one of the shields. As thus illustrated. my invention comprises a band-like holder or body portion A, provided, preferably, Vat its back portion with a couple of straps or flexible connections a, adapted to have their ends brought over and sewed or otherwise fastened to the front portion of the holder or body portion, so as to provide shoulder or supporting straps for the garment in its entirety. The front or end portions can be provided -with a couple of strings or pieces of tape a, adapted to be tied or otherwise fastened together for the purpose o f securing the garment in place upon the body of the wearer, it being understood that in use the said holder or body portion is adjusted in place just below the arms of the wearer.4 The curved side portions a2 are preferably provided at different points with the ,sockets B of separable buttons or similar devices, and these are preferably located and sewed or otherwise secured to the holder or body portion A in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 2. As a matter of further and special improvement thel entire holder or body portion is preferably composed of a porous-mesh ventilating-cloth, the same being preferably bound at its edges with tape or braid a3. It will be understood, however, that this holderor body portion can be of any suitable or desired material.

rIhe shields C can be of any suitable known or approved shape or construction. Preferably, they are composed of two outer plys or layers c of nainsook or other suitable material and an intermediate ply or layer c of waterproof tissue. It is obvious, however, that these shields can be of any suitable or desired character. The outer or crescent-shaped por tion c2 of the shields are preferably provided with a strap or piece of tape c3, adapted to be brought over and fastened at its free end to the opposite edge of the shield, as shown in Fig. l. Thus these straps or flexible connections are adapted to encircle the arms of the wearerthat is to say, they secure the upper portions of the shields to the arms, while the straps a, which pass over the shoulder of the wearer, sustain the weight of the garment and hold it up in place under the arms of the wearer. Each shield is preferably provided with the ball members D of the said separable buttons, and these are sewed or otherwise fastened in place, as shown in Fig. 3, and arranged in position to engage the socket members B on the holder or body portion of the garment. Thus the shields can be readily removed when worn or impaired by usage and can then be replaced by new ones. 1n this way it is not necessary to throw away the entire garment when the shields wear out. Furthermore, the arrangement, although obviating the necessity of throwing away more than the shields when the same wear out, at the same time makes it unnecessary to sew or otherwise secure the shields on the dress or clothing of the wearer.

By leaving the ends of the straps a and a3 free at their ends the garment can be sold to people of different sizes, and these straps can then be sewed in place and adjusted to suit the comfort or desires of the user. In other words, the said straps can be suitably sewed or otherwise fastened in place and the garment thereby made to properly fit the wearer. Other advantages will be obvious to those familiar with articles of this character. It will also be seen that by employing a porous-mesh ventilating-cloth for the holder or body portion I obtain an eflicient Ventilating action or effect between the shields and the body of the wearer. It is obvious, however, that cheaper and less expensive materials than this porous-mesh Ventilating-cloth can be employed, if desired.

'lhus constructed it will be seen that my improved dress-shield arrangement is characterized by a high degree of convenience, practicability, and economy.

What I claim as my invention isl'. As an article of manufacture, a dressshield arrangement adapted to be worn like a garment, comprising a band-like holder or non-waterproof body portion adapted to be adjusted in place around the body of the wearer and provided with means for uniting its forward end portions, shoulder-straps for supporting the said holder or body portion in place just below the arms of the wearer, and a pair of waterproof shields detachably secured to the side portions of said holder or body portion, whereby there is no necessity of fastening the shields to the clothing of the wearer, or of throwing the said holder or body portion away when the said shields become worn or impaired by usage.

2. As an article of manufacture, a dressshield arrangement consistingof a holder having side portions made of a porous-mesh ventilating-cloth, and a pair of dress-shields removably secured to said side portions of the holder, the said porous-mesh Ventilating-cloth being between the shields and the body of the wearer when the arrangement is worn.

3. In a dress-shield arrangement, a layer of porous-mesh Ventilating-cloth to be placed neXt 4to the body of the wearer, and a waterproof ply or layer detachably secured to the outside of said layer of porous-mesh ventilating-cloth, whereby the waterproof material can be readily separated from the porous-mesh Ventilating-cloth.

4C. As an article of manufacture, a dressshield arrangement comprising a body p0rtion of ieXible material to be worn around the body just below the arms and provided with means for supporting and fastening it in place, and a pair of dress-shields to be worn under the arms and between the said body portion and the outer clothing of the wearer, said dress-shields being detachably secured to the sides of the said body portion.

5. As an article of manufacture, a dressshield arrangement comprising a body portion of porous-mesh Ventilating-cloth to be worn around the body just below the arms and provided with means for supporting and fastening it in place, and a pair of dress-shields to be worn under the arms and between the said porous-mesh Ventilating-cloth and the outer clothing of the wearer, said dress-shields being detachably secured to the sides of said body portion.

6. In a shield arrangement, an inner nonwaterproof body portion, and an outer waterproof portion, the non-waterproof portion being adapted to be placed next to the body, and means for detachably securing the two portions together.
