PATENT OFFICE. I
COMBlNED HlP-REDUCER AND HOSE-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,087, dated December 1903- Application filed January 28, 1903- Serial ITO-140,855. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARY E. GARDNER DAR- RAH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Hip- Reducer and Hose-Supporter, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a combined hipreducer and hosesupporter, the object thereof being to provide an efficient means for binding and contracting the hips to prevent lateral bulging and maintain natural and artistic curves of the side lines of the figure.
It has been found that the use of corsets by fleshy people when the corset is tightly adjusted around the body causes a roll or ridge of flesh to be extended laterally below the lower edge of the corset, which gives to the hips a square appearance and mars the side lines of the figure. By the use of my invention this inartistic effect is obviated and at the same time I provide an efficient means for supporting the hose.
The invention comprises novel features embodying an improved binder composed of several parts of unique contour and novel function so assembled as to carry out the requirements of the device.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device, showing the same in about the position it would take when worn. Fig. 2 is a view from the inside, showing the device opened; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view illustrating the device adjusted in position around the body of a person.
Referring to the drawings, A A represent the front and parts of the sides, and B B the back and parts of the sides thereof. Each section A embodies a segmental part a, approximately of the contour shown, having the lower edge form the converging angles 1 2 and the curved line 3. To each edge part 2 is attached a tapering tongue G, and to each edge part 1 is attached a similarly-shaped tongue C, the angles and curved edges of the parts being relatively of such nature that the side scams 4 are curved to conform to the curves of the body. Adjacent to the side edge of each section A and sewed thereto is a segmental section D, and sewed to this section is a segmental section D. These form part of the sides and the back of the device.
The conjunction of each extended part at of its section D with the curved edge of the adjacent part G forms a depending tongue 0 to which is attached a strap G, which is adjustable in length by means of the buckle g and has any suitable clip, as g, attached to its lower looped part. These straps are of the ordinary construction generally employed as a means for supporting hose. Similar straps H H are attached to the front tongues C of the device for supporting the stockings at the front.
To adapt the device to conform perfectly to the lines of the hips, I employ lower darts 5 and upper darts 6*. I do not confine myself to the specific location and number of these darts, as they may vary in number and location to meet requirements of various bodily proportions.
The device embodies two thicknesses of fabric, and it is provided with flat flexible ribs E and F, located between the two thicknesses of fabric at the seams 4t and 5. These act to stiffen the device and maintain it in perfect shape.
The rearward edges of the device are respectively provided with a row of eyeletholes 01 for engagement with a lacing-string I, adapted for fastening the device around the body.
In the operation and use of the invention it may be placed either beneath or over the lower part of the corset, preferably over the corset, as illustrated by Fig. 3 of the drawings. It is then tightly secured around the hips by means of the lacing-string I, whereby any bulging of the flesh beneath and around the lower edge of the corset is pre vented, and the lines of beauty of the hips are artistically maintained. To keep the device in proper place and prevent it from riding upwardly, the straps G are attached to the upper ends of the stockings, near the sides thereof, and the straps H H to the fronts. Thus these straps not only act to keep the device in proper position around the body, but act as an efficient means for supporting the hose.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-
1. As a new article of manufacture, a binder for maintaining the shape of the hips, comprising a garment formed to only fit around and conform to the body in the hip plane, said garment embodying a plurality of sections secured together at their sides, suitable ribs for strengthening, and tapering tongues depending from the front, one at each side of the vertical center thereof, and tapering tongues forming part of the side sections, the garment so formed being closed at the front, opened in the back and adapted to be adjusted supplementarily with respect to the hip portion of a corset, means for conneeting the adjacent edges of the back independently of the corset, and straps attached to each of the depending tongues, said straps adapted for engaging the stockings, and means connecting the straps to the stockings, whereby the straps Will serve to hold up the stockings and maintain the garment down upon the hips.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a binder for maintaining the shape of the hips, comprising a garment formed to only fit around and conform to the body in the hip plane, said garment embodying the sections A, A, respectively having the lower edge converging angles 1, 2 and curve 3, sections D, having the tapering extensions d, and back sections D, all secured together at their sides, and tapering tongues C, O, for engaging stocking-supporters, said tongues 0 secured to the said angular parts 2, and said tapering tongues C, secured between the angles 2 and the adjacent edge part of the said extensions d; the garment so formed being closed at the front and opened in the back, and means for connecting the free edges of the back of the binder to fasten the same around the body.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 24th day of J anuary, 1903.
