Description

W. S. WOOTTON.
SUSPENSORY.
APPLICATION FILED AUG-4, 1913.
Patented Apr. 13, 1915;
THE NORRIS PETERS CQ, PHOTO-LITHQ. WASHINGTON, D. c
WILLIAM S. WOOT'ION, 0F BOANOKE, VIRGINIA.
SUSPENSORY.
Application filed August 4, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM S. VVOOTTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roanoke, in thecounty of Roanoke and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspensories, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in suspensories, the primary object being to provide a generally improved suspensory of exceedingly simple, cheap, and efficient construction which may be readily and conveniently attached to or detached from an ordinary undershirt or similar garment worn by the wearer, as well as a suspensory which may be readily adjusted to meet the varying requirements of a device of this class, and more particularly, one in which the parts will be retained in proper position while in use.
With the above mentioned and other ends in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in one of its embodiments in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1, is a front view of the improved suspensory as it appears in its operative position applied to the body of the wearer. Fig. 2, an en larged perspective view of the same detached, and illustrating the arrangement of the attaching cords and buttons as they appear when connected to the suspensory bows at the front. Fig. 3, a detail perspective view of the pivoted or connected ends of the suspensory bows and attaching button, the suspensory-bag being remover. Fig. d, an enlarged cross sectional view of the upper portion of one of the suspensory bows taken on line l4 of Fig. 2.
Similar numerals of reference designate like parts throughout all the figures of the drawings.
The improved suspensory comprises sub stantially V-shaped suspensory bows 1, of suitable flexible material, and, in the present instance, hingedly or pivotally connected to each other to form the apex portion of the ti-shaped form, said apex portion being provided with a suspensory-bag 2, the latter being formed of any suitable and con- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 113, 119115. Serial No. 782,828.
venient material and connected about its upper marginal edges to the inner or pivoted ends of the bows l, in the present instance, covering the latter and secured by a line of stitching 2 As a means for hingedly or pivotally connecting the suspensory bows 1, as well as forming a convenient attaching device for connecting the attaching cords or straps 3, at the rear, as hereinafter more fully described, a depending button 4,.is provided, said button i, being provided with a shank portion 4, forming a connecting bearing for the connected ends of the bows 1, as shown most clearly in Fig. 3, of the drawings.
The suspensory bows 1, are preferably stiffened or reinforced by means of longitudinally extending ribs 1 and provided at the upper or free ends with loop eyes 1", the latter being preferably provided with outwardly extending flange portions 1, as shown most clearly in Fig. 4:, of the drawings.
As a means for properly adjusting and securing the parts above described in proper position upon the wearer, as well as meeting the varying demands upon a device of this class while in actual service, the attaching cords or straps 3, when applied to the wearer, are preferably arranged in V-shaped form, the median portion 3 thereof being adapted to detachably connect with the button 4, the side portions or members being adapted to extend upwardly and forwardly about the hips or thighs of the wearer, and preferably, over the undershirt or other similar garment, and as a means for adjusting and securing the improved suspensory in proper position relative to the shirt or garment, as well as connecting the free ends of the bows 1, and cords or straps 3, to each other, the free ends of said cords or straps are provided with attaching or button members 5, adapted to engage and be covered with a fold or thickness of the undershirt or garment, as at a, and to pass such covering of the garment through the eyes 1", of the bows, the button members 5, when inserted and resting in their normal positions serving to pinch and clamp the fabric against the flanges 1, as shown most clearly in Fig. 1, of the drawings.
As a means for more efiectively clamping the cloth or fabric as well as preventing the disarrangement of the buttons 5, when inserted, the latter are preferably provided with oppositely disposed notches 5*, on their inner sides (see Fig. 2) to receive and interlock with the adjacent flanges 1, of the eyes of the suspensory bows.
The median portion 3 of the attaching cords or straps 3, is preferably formed of a separate lengthof cord or strap folded upon itself and looped through loops 3*, of the side straps or cords 3, and adjustably and detachably connected atthe ends in a loopknot b, by means of which the length of the attaching cords or straps may be regulated and the various parts adjusted as desired to meet various requirements.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operationand advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
Having thus described one of the embodiments of my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
1. In a suspensory adapted to be attached to a shirt, a pair of curved suspensory bows arranged in V-shaped form and pivotally connected at their apex portion, a suspensory-bag carried within said apex portion, and attachingcords detachably connected to the. opposite ends of said bows.
2. In a suspensory adapted to be attached to a shirt, curved suspensory bows hingedly' connected to each other in V-shaped form I and provided with a suspensory-bag at the apex portion thereof, and means for detachably supporting and connecting the opposite ends of said bows to said shirt.
3. In a suspensory adapted to be attached to a shirt, curved suspensory bows pivotally connected to each other and arranged in V- shaped form, a suspensory-bag carried by said bows, and attaching cord members arranged in similar form and detachably connected to the opposite ends of said bows.
t. A suspensory adapted to be attached to a shirt, comprising a pair of flexible suspensory bows arranged in V-shaped form and pivotally connected at their apex portion, a suspensory-bag carried at the apex portion of said bows, and attaching cords detachably connected to the free ends of said bows and to said shirt and the apex portion of said bows.
5. In a suspensory adapted to be attached to a shirt, a pair of pivotally connected suspensory bows arranged in V-shaped form, a suspensory-bag within the apex portion thereof, and attaching straps detachably connected to said apex portion and provided with attaching members detachably connected to said shirt and the free ends of said bows.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM S. WOOTTON.
