SIEECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,145, dated September 6, 1904.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, FRED BosZHARD'r, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Kirkland, in the county of Dekalb and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new, useful, and Improved Twine-Cutter, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which corresponding letters of reference in the different figures indicate like parts.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and effective twine-cutter to be worn upon the finger of the user for the purpose of cutting string, twine, orthread in the wrapping or undoing' of packages of various kinds, as well as for the use of tailors, seamstresses, 'and others, and which shall be so constructed -as to effectually clamp the twine before severing it, thereby preventing it from slipping and insuring a clean cut at the place where it is brought into contact with the cutter.

To these ends my invention consists in the combination .of elements hereinafter more particularly described, and definitely pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved'twine-cutter as it would appear when upon the linger` and in the act of clamping and cutting a piece of twine. Fig. 2 is an edge view of my improved cutter; Fig. 3, a plan view thereof, and Fig. I an edge view of a modified construction.

Referring to the drawings, o represents a ring, preferably formed from a strip or ribbon of sheet-steel, bent upon itself and soldered or riveted at Z), Fig. 2, from which point a portion of the strip c is extended eccentrically from the body of the ring. Within said extended portion I form knife-edged notches OZ e f, respectively, the notches d c being upon opposite-sides of the extension 0,

while the notch f is formed diagonally from the end and side, as shown in Fig. 3. The

part c is of such thickness and so tempered as to permit it to yield when a moderate pressure is applied thereto by the thumb of the hand upon which the ring is placed, as clearly shown in'Fig. 1. This feature is of Serial No. 204,615. (No model.)

Either of the notches d c may be used in conjunction with the clamp, while the notch f is very useful for severing twine upon bundles which are to be unwrapped, a single quick stroke serving to cut the twine. `It will be observed, however, that different-conditions are involved in severing the twine upon a wrapped bundle andvin severing the surplus twine after tying a knot in wrapping a bundle. In the former case the twine cannot slip, while in the latter it is likely to do so unlessespecial precaution is taken, and in case it does slip the knot is liable to be untied. With my combined'clamp and cutter this objectionable contingency is WhollyT avoided.

It is immaterial whether the spring-clamp is made integral with the ring or as an attachment to it. In'Fig. t Ihave shownV a ring of ordinaryconstruction having the springclamp /i riveted thereto at z'.

I am aware that twine-cutters of varying form have been used in connection with finger-rings; but I am not aware that a combined clamp and cutter has ever been so employed.'

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A twine-cutter of the class described, in which is combined a ring having a yielding resilient extension branching' from its body, to form a space beneath for the passage of the twine, said extension being provided with a fnotchedcutter, whereby vapressure upon said extension may serve to clampa twine between it and the body of the ring to pre- IOO vent the twine from slipping when brought into contact with the cutter.

2.v As an improved article of manufacture, a combined twine clamp and cutter consisting of a finger ring having a spring tempered steel branch extending eccentrically therefrom to form a space between for the reception of a twine to be clamped thereby, said branch having a knife-edged notch near its free end.

3. A combined twine clamp and cutter, consisting of a finger-ring having a spring branch extending eccentricallytherefrom, :for the reception of an intervening twine, said branch being provided near its free end. with a plurality of knife-edged notches.
