HARRY JIIPURPLE, OF NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO UNITED DRUG COMPANY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHU- SETTS.
SHAVING-STICK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 28, 1919.
Application filed June 23, 1919. Serial No. 306,240.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY J. PURPLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newton, county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in shavingsticks, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings repre senting like parts.
This invention relates to shaving sticks and like articles which are used in asimilar manner, by rubbing them, and more particularly to that type of shaving stick wherein the container also serves as a holder by which the stick proper or soap bar may be handled. As shaving sticks are the most generally known articles to which my invention is applicable, I shall herein refer'particularly to a shaving stick, using that expression in an exemplary sense. I
My invention will best be understood by the following description of the illustrative embodiment thereof shown in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete package;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the cover removed;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation, partly broken away, showing how the last portion of the soap bar may be used; and
Fig. at is a plan view of the soap bar removed. 7
In accordance with my invention I provide a soap bar 5 which may be of cylindrical form, that is, of uni-form section throughout its length. Usually itwill be cylindrical in the narrower sense of that word meaning a right circular cylinder. The stick is here shown as inclosed in a case or package of metalwhich may embody the bottom or handle portion 7 and the cover portion 9, which conveniently are ofcounterpart form for reasons hereinafter stated.
To support the soap bar 5 in the handle portion 7 the former is provided with a ring 11 conveniently in the form of a bendable band which may be wound around the stick between its ends, as shown in Fig. 4:, forming a broken ring encircling the same. This ring may be provided with suitable means for interlocking with the stick and I have herein shown struck-up prongs 13. The
ring 11 is conveniently positioned centrally as indicated in Fig. 2.
The main portion of the hollow handle 7 may be of substantially the same size as the stick 5 and the outer end may be belled to provide the annular seat 15 (Fig. 3) receiving the ring 11, from which seat rises the cylindrical flange 17 embracing the broken ring and holding it in its encircling gripping relation about the soap bar 5. Suitable cooperating catch means 19 may be provided on the flange and the ring. The cover portion 9 may be of substantially similar construction, the bell portion providing a like cup-like enlargement receiving the outer end of the ring or band 11, the two portions 7 and 9 forming a complete inclosing casing for the soap bar.
. When the shaving stick is first used, it will have, when the cover-9 is removed, the appearance shown in Fig. 2 and the upper end portion of the bar 5 may be used until worn away. It will be noted that the handle portion 7 is of considerable length which permits the hand firmly to grasp the same, the bottom resting against the palm while the fingers hold the metal of the container instead of the possibly wet soap itself. After the upwardly projecting half of the bar is worn away, it may be reversed bodily, the opposite end of the band 11 then resting on the seat 15 of the part 7. If desired, however, the stick may be removed and the band 11 unbent and clamped around the stick lower down. This may be done as a final economy permitting the utilization of the stick practically to the end, as indicated in Fig. 3 wherein it may be supposed that the stick has been used in its initial and in its reversed position until two small stumps were left on either side of the band 11. The band was then unbent and clamped about the remaining small portion of the stick flush with one end thereof, thus providing a projecting end of considerable extent, as indicated in the figure, ready for use.
It is of some importance that the form of my invention here shown permits the use of a stick of uniform cross section and not specially formed in any way, as this is a desirable initial simplification and permits as well the shifting of the stick in the holding ring, as described.
The various parts may be very simply manufactured, without any comparatively be done by an entirely unskilled person andthe user may buy additional soap bars and use them with his old holder by simply unbending the flexible band 11 and wrapping it about the bar in the manner indicated in Fig. 4:. The belled end of the holder will hold the bar in place and provides a firm support for the same preventing undue wa'bbling of the stick in use.
I am aware that it has been proposed to provide a shaving stick with counterpart box portions one of which would serve as a handle in which the stick could be reversibly mounted, and I therefore do not claim that idea broadly. The principles which are exemplified by the form of my invention here illustrated and which I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, I shall express in the following claims.
I claim 1. A shaving stick comprising a cylindrical soap bar, an encircling band about the same between the ends thereof, and. complementary container parts having enlarged open ends providing cup-shaped seats for the band.
2. A shaving stick comprising a cylindrical soap bar, a bendable band encircling the same and having portions to interlock the bar and a hollow handle portion having an open end flanged toprovidea cup-like enlargen'ient receiving said band.
3. A shaving stick comprising a cylindrical soap bar, a band wound about the same having projections interlocking with the bar and a handle portion having an annular seat receiving the band provided with a flange embracing the same.
i. A shaving stick comprising a soap bar having a ring around the same between its ends and a hollow handle portion having an open end boiled to provide a seat closely receiving said rin 5. A shaving stick comprising a soap bar, a broken ring having projections entering the bar and a hollow handle portion having an annular seat receiving the ring provided with a flange surrounding the same and holding it in gripping relation to the bar.
6. A shaving stick comprising a cylindrical soap bar, a band wound about the same having projections interlocking with the bar and a handle portion having an open end receiving the band and having means interlocking therewith to support the same.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
HARRY J. PURPLE.
