. WILLIAM HALsEY BENJAMIN, a citizen of the Be it known that lwe, AUGUSTUS ALBERT WEST, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county. ofKings, city and State of New York, and

United States, resident of the cit of Newark, county of Essex, and State o New Jersey, have invented-certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Pufers, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to certain improve- I ments in the puffer proper which, although is such that the production of additional 'the completed device ready slots for the reception of certain metallic parts is unnecessary.

The following is a description ofv what we consider the best means of carrying out the invention.

The accompanying drawings form a part ofthis specification, 1n whch Figure 1 is a view partly in perspective of or operation. The two parts of Fig. 2 show the principal members of the device separated'one frpm the other. The members are shown in s1de elevation. Fig. 3 is an end elevation corresponding to Fig. 1, though on a somewhat smaller scale. Fig. 4 shows a modification. In this figure, one of the parts is provlded with a handle, formed integral therewith. Fi 5 shows the device in operation.

Similar reference numerals indicate like parts in all the figures where they appear.

The device is composed of two principal members, indicated at 1 and 2. In the preferred method of production, these' parts are exactly similar. They are of wood that has been finished on its flattenedvsides. The up\ firmness to allow use, vand joined together by causing the slot 3 to slide I upon the part 2 andthe slot 4 tofassume a similar position on the part 1. If care is taken to produce slots 2 and 3 of a width just suiciently to fit snugly the'full parts of the members 1 and 2, the devicey will be found to be held together with just suiicient yet be readily separable when occasion requires.

InFig. we have shown a certain metallic member 8 in use in conjunction with the device, but we do not care to limit the use of this device to any particular metallic member. The one shown is described in 'Patent No. 785,844 March 28th, 1905, though any devlce of a like nature may be used with equal satisfaction. .In using the device the parts 1 and 2 are joined as described, and one end of the structurels then grasped by the fingers of one hand as shown in Fig. 1. A desired quantity of hair 1s then wound about the structure and the metallic clamp is slid beneath the .hair through one of the hollows caused by the angle of the adjoining parts. The clamp v1s secured to the hair entirely independent of the wooden putler and the puer can then be removed. The puffed hair isv now ready to be secured in place and spread out in the ordinary manner.

scope of the appended claims without departing from the principle or sacrificing the 4advantages of the invention.

At Fig. 4 we have shown the device constructed in such a manner as to produce a handle. The handle is formed integral with one of the main parts. In this modification the hair can only be removed from the puffer from one end, the end op osite the handle. The curve is then produce in the part from a point adjacent to the handle to the end opposite. This device may be made of celluloid or metal if it is found desirable, though in our experiments we have found nicely nished wood to work with no little satisfaction. Means may be provided for securing the two main parts together permanently, as for instance, the parts may be glued, but this would ordinarily defeat the invention, what we `desire to` secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. In anew article of manufacture, a hair pufl'er composed of a plurality of Hat members, each member being provided with a central longitudinal slot arranged to slide axially upon another member in a manner to bisect each said member and produce a plurality of hollows adapted to receive one linkof a hair clamp, as specilied.

2. A hair puller composed of a plurality of independent flat parts, the edges of each said part being curved insuch 'a manner as to produce a wider portion at mid-length the part, each said member being provided with a central longitudinal slot and arranged to ner to bisect each said member and roduce a plurality of deep hollows adapte to receive one link of a hair clamp as specified.
