TOBACCO-KNIFE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 592,538, dated October 26, 1897. Application filed June 4, 1897. Serial No. 639,445. (No model.)

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, \VARREN COLE, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Knoxville, in the county of Knox and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Knives; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to provide an extremely cheap, durable, and simple device for cutting off portions of a plug of tobacco to chew, a device that can be applied to the plug itself in a superior manner and can be readily removed for use, and then replaced on the plug and carried with the latter in the pocket.

To this end my invention consists in the peculiar features and combinations of parts more fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.

Inthe accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my device as applied to an ordinary plug of tobacco; Fig. 2, a side view thereof, and Fig. 3 a perspective View of thedevice detached from the plug.

In the present instance I prefer to construct the device out of a continuous piece of steel wire of any suitable size that will afford the requisite amount of resiliency and metal. This wire is bent to give it the general outline of an elongated U ,with one prong extended beyond the other to form a peculiarly-arranged knife.

The reference-letter (t represents the longer, and bthe shorter, of the two prongs. The end of the longer prong is flattened and thereby widened into the shape of a razor-blade c, curved back laterally out of coincidence with the longitudinal plane of the prong on which it is made. This blade is thus shapedin order to lie flat upon the side of the plug of tobacco on which it is placed, with its cutting edge (I so close thereto that it will not cut the pocket or hand of the person handling the plug. It will be observed that the edgewise plane of the blade lies substantially at right angles to the widest transverse plane of the body portion of the implement. The opposite or shorter arm I), being resilient, has its free end 6 curved outwardly a short distance for the purpose of facilitating the operation of passing the device astride of the end of a plug. The prongs should be closer together than the thickness of the plug, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, whereby when the short prong is pressed back and away from the long prong its resiliency will clamp the plug tightly and hold the cutter securely upon it.

Some'of the advantages of my device are that it can be embedded in the plugs of tobacco as they are packed in the case, one or more in each plug, and can in that way be used by the manufacturer as an advertising medium. They can be made in different sizes of spread to fit various thicknesses of plugs.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The herein-described tobacco-cutting implement adapted to embrace a plug of tobacco, and consisting of an elongated and substantially U shaped bar of metal having a resilient shorter prong provided with an outwardly-turned end, in combination with a substantially parallel prong extended beyond the end of the opposite prong, and provided with a blade the transverse plane of which lies substantially at right angles to that of the body portion of the implement.

2. The herein-described tobacco-cutting implement adapted to embrace under pressure aplug of tobacco, and consisting of a substantially U-shaped continuous bar of metal having a resilient shorter prong provided with an outwardlyturned end, in combination with a substantially parallel longer prong extended beyond the end of the other prong, and having a widened blade thereon, the transverse plane of which extends at right angles to the transverse plane of the body portion of the implement, and being curved laterally out of coincidence With the longitudinal plane of the prong on which it is made.

3. The herein-described tobacco-cutting implement consisting of a continuous metal bar, U -shaped in general outline, and adapted to clasp under pressure a plug of tobacco, one of the prongs being extended beyond the other, and provided with a knife-edge bev= 1o eled on both sides, and the other short-er arm having its end beveled outwardly to facilitate passing the device astride a plug of tobacco, substantially as described.
