A A. LOW. TWINE CUTTER. No. 419,271,
Patented Jan. 14, 1890.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC ABBOT AUGUSTUS LOW, OF BROOKLYN, NEWV YORK.
TWINE-CUTTER.
. l SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 419,271, dated January 14, 1890- Application filed March 23, 1889. Serial No. 304,531. (NomodeL) To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABBOT AUGUSTUS Low, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Implements, of which the following is a specification sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which the invention appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to the construction of the combination implement set forth in my application, Serial No. 293,514, filed December 13, 1888, the distinguishing feature of which consists in a single piece of metal having the general form of a button-hook, upon which other devices for special purposes are formed. In the application referred to, which is concurrent with the present application, the handle of the button-hook is formed with a cordcutting device of peculiar construction; and the main feature of my present improvement consists in forming and combining with the button-hook another special construction of cord-cutting device shaped from and in the portion of the metallic blank which constitutes the handle of the button-hook during use, the
essential feature of such special construction being the employment of 'a comparatively long interior cutting edge which is isolated and protected by a guard-arm, by which a slot is formed for the reception of the cord or other article to be cut or severed, said slot having a comparatively narrow lateral entrance and allowing the cutting-edge to be drawn longi tudinally back and forth across the cord to be severed.
I am aware that in another application, Serial No. 296,445, filed January 15,1889, I show and describe substantially the same form of cord-cutter with protected blade; but in that case I claim the device as a cord-cutter independent of any other device or combination of parts, whereas in the present case I limit myself simply to a combined button-hook and cord-cutter of special construction formed.
from and in a single piece or blank of metal.
In connection with the peculiar form of cord-cutting device herein set forth, my present invention also includes the formation of the adjoining end of the device in the shape of a wedge to facilitate its insertion underneath cords or other fastenin gs bound tightly around an object, the end being introduced between the cord and the object to be unfastened until the narrow entrance of the cutterslot is brought into coincidence with the cord, when the device may be readily turned so as to bring the cord against the interior cuttingedge and the cord severed by raising the button-hook-shank portion of the device, which latter is thereby caused to act as a lever of the second class.
In the accompanying and 2 are respectively elevations of opposite sides of the combination implement; Fig. 3, an edge elevation of the same; Fig. 4, an elevation of the hook end of the device; Fig. 5, a transverse section upon plane of line w 41:, Fig. 1; Fig. 6, an elevation of the wedgeshaped extremity of the device; Fig. 7, an isometrical perspective ofv the implement, illustrating the operation of severing a cord; Fig. 8, a View illustrating the introduction of the wedge-shaped end of the device underneath a cord tightly surrounding a bundle and Fig. 9, a sectional view of the implement, illustrating the position of the cutting-edge againstthe binding-cord when the device is inserted underneath the latter, as shown in Fig. 8, and then turned one-quarter around or at. right angles to the bundle.
The implement A is formed from a single piece or blank'of any suitable metal. At one extremity it is formed with ahook H, adapted for use as a button-fastener, lace-tightener, or any of the analogous uses to which such devices are applied. The other extremity of the implement is formed into a wedge W, adapted to be inserted underneath a cord or other fastening, as illustrated in Fig. 8. When thus used, the endW is passed underneath the cord 0 until the latter coincides with the entrance 3 to the cutter-slot S, when the implement is turned so as to occupy substantially the position indicated in Fig. 9, thus bringing the knife-edge K against the cord 0 in position to sever the latter.
The act of severing the cord 0 is performed either by raising the hook end of the implement by the shank h as a handle, so that the end ,W acts as a fulcrum against the'package, or by reciprocating the implementunder the cord and thereby sawing the latter in two.
drawings, Figures 1 The use of the knife K as a cutting-blade for afree or loose cord is illustrated in Fig. 7. lhc knife'edge K is formed in the body of What may be designated as the handle aof the button-hook. It is preferably straight, and 1s protected by a parallel guard G, consistlng of astrip or projection of the blank A, by Wh1cl1 means the cord-slot S is created, a suitable lateral opening 3 being formed for the admission of the cord. A projection of thewedge V is formed into a point or brad B, which is utilized as a scriber or as a means for starting a small perforation or hole in wood or other substance for various purposes, such as starting a hole for screws, tacks, nails, &c., or for perforating thin substances. The point of the brad is in a measure protected and prer'ented from penetratlng too far by the adjoining edge 10 of the wedge \V, which acts as a shoulder or guard to Ward off unintentional or undesirable contact with the brad.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A combined implement consisting of a single piece of metal formed into and with the hook II, shank h, handle a, cutting-edge K, slot S, parallel guard G, and entrance 8, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described. a
2. A combined implement consisting of a single piece of metal formed into and with the hook H, shank 71-, handle a, cutting-edge K, parallel guard G, slot S, lateral en trance 3, an d Wedge-shaped extremity \V, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
