-D. C. MAUL'DBN.
TWINE GUTTER.
110.461,245. Patented 001;. 13,1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEETCE.v
DOCTOR CHESTER MAULDEN, OF SOUTH SULPHUR, TEXAS.
'rwlNE-CUTT'ER.l
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,245, dated October 13, 1891.
Application filed May 16,1891. Serial No. 393,057. (No model.)
.To @Z5 whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, DOCTOR CHESTER MAUL- DEN, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of South Sulphur, in the county of Hunt and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in RopegCutters; and l do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication, and in Which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved rOpe-cutter, showing the same in its Operative position, fastened to one side of a rope-rack. Fig. 2 is a side view ofthe device with a piece of rope in position for cutting. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line :r x in Fig. 2, but showing the knife in its closed position after cutting; and Fig.4 is alongitudinalsectional View of the cutter bracket and bearing.
Like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to devices for cutting rope in stores Where rope iskept for sale; and it consists in a cutting device which is adapted to be fastened permanently to the rope-rack or counter, so as to be always handy and ready for use at the place Where Wanted.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the let-ter A designates a rope-rack provided with the usual series of spools S, containing rope of various dimensions. The cutter is fastened to one of the sides or standards of this rack at such a height from the floor as to be within easy reach by means of screwsa a, inserted through opposite ends of the bracket B, which has a projecting arm or bearing C, the outerend of whichis turned in an upward direction, as shown at D.
The cutter proper consists of a handle E of suitable length to get a good leverage Or purchase and a knife-blade F, the handle being continued beyond the blade and. hinged in a slot b inthe bracket above the projecting bearing C, and the latter is provided in alignment with and Opposite to the knife-blade F With a longitudinal slot c, adapted tO receive the sharp edge of the knife when this is in its losed or depressed position, as illustrated in ig. 3. To use the device, the knife is lifted by its handle E and the rope to be cut (shown at R) is placed crosswise over the bearingC under the knife. By now depressing the handle the rope will be severed as the edge of the knife enters the slot c. the outer end of the rope support or bearingC forms a stop or abutment for the knife-handle, preventing the Wedgeshaped knife-blade from entering too deeply into its slot c, so as to bind therein. This slotted bearing C is an essential and important element, as, in the first place, it supports the rope while being The projection D at i cut; secondly, forms a protection for the edge ofthe knife when not in use, and, finally,
Apermits the knife to completely sever the rope by cutting entirely through it.
A tobacco-cutter or so-called plug-cutter cannot .be used successfully for cutting rope, because the edge of theknife bearing against a flat-surface Willonly cut through the thick part or body of the rope and would fail to sever all the fibers on the under side; but by my device the rope is cut completely through by a single operation. y
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The hereinbefore described rope cutter, comprising the slotted bracket B, in one piece with the lateral extension or bearing C, having longitudinal slot c and stop D, in combination with the lever-handle E, having a projecting knifeblade F, registering Vwith the slot in bearing C.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
DOCTOR CHESTER MAULDEN.
