SMOKERS IMPLEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.'366,611, dated July 12, 1887.
Application filed Novemher13, 1884. Serial No. 147,819.
To ctZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN P. RICHARD- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Sufiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Smokers Implements; and I do hereby declare that the same are fully described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to provide a compact, neat, convenient, useful, and easilyportable article for the use of smokers of to bacco, in the form of a pocket Cigar cutter and pipe cleaner and tamper.
My invention is embodied in the implement herein shown and described, and particularly referred to in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1. is a plan .view. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the rear side of the de vice, showing the blade in a different position; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the same.
In the larger end of the blade A is a circular perforation, D, of proper size to admit the end of a cigar. The sides of this perforation are beveled outwardly-that is, from the blade Bin order that the tapering end of the cigar when inserted may fit firmly and evenly against the sides of the orifice.
The blade B, which is parallel and in contact with the blade A throughout, has at its larger end a double-cutting edge, I, fitting closely to the edge of the opening D, so that when the end of the cigar is inserted in the opening the movement of the blade B in either direction against the cigar cuts off the end at the proper point, leaving a smooth and even surface. This cut ting-blade is also adapted to serve as an ink-eraser when required. To the opposite end of the blade A is attached transversely a flat circular disk or tamper, G, of suitable diameter, for the purpose of pressing or tamping down the tobacco in the bowl of a pipe preparatory to or during the act of smoking. The outer face of this disk may be suitably engraved to serve as a letter-seal.
The end of the blade B opposite to the out ting end is formed tapering and of proper shape to form (when reversed upon the pivot C, so as to project beyond the blade A) a pick (No model.)

The perforated end of the blade A is made somewhat longer than the cutting end of the blade B, so as to form a protection or shield for the latter when not in use for cutting.
I am aware of the bolt-cutter patent of WVhi ttaker, dated July 25, 1871, No. 117,495,
showing a bar havinga'square opening through it, of uniform diameter, to receive a nut, and a cutting-blade pivoted to said bar and worked by a separate lever and connecting-link, giving a compound leverage. Such an implement would be wholly unsuited to my purposes, and I therefore make no claim thereto; but
I claim as my invention- 1. The implement described and shown,consisting of the blade A, having a circular beveled opening through it, and the blade B, piv-' oted thereto, having two cutting-edges, in combination with the pivot O, which unites said blades and the automatic catch E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the blades A and B, made of about equal length and pivoted to gether at O, the short end of the blade B having two cutting-edges, and the corresponding end of the blade A extending in a curved line slightly beyond said edges and serving as a guard for them, substantially as set forth.
