become worn and consequently smooth due to constant use.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device simple of construction and inexpensive to manufacture, the device comprising a suitable plate with which is connected elastic means so as to yieldingly engage the plate with an ordinary type of stirrup now in use, and at the same time Wlll allow for the ready removal of the same therefrom when it is so desired.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims forming a part of this specification.
Referring to the drawings :-Figure 1 is aside elevation of a stirrup illustrating the application of my invention, a portion thereof being shown in section to disclose details; Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1 and looking at the top of my improved anti-slipping plate; Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a variant form of my improved plate.
In the drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of this invention an ordinary stirrup 5 is provided ,whi ch is made of wood, metal or any other suitable material and is provided with an ordinary tread portion 6 which has formed therein an elongated longitudinally extending recess 7.
My improved anti-slipping plate in the present instance comprises a pair of metal straps 8. Each of the straps 8 has a por tion of one of the longitudinal edges thereof turned at right-angles to the body thereof and thence into parallelism with the body as indicated at 9. The opposite ends of each of the plates 8 are curved inwardly conforming to the configuration of the tread plate 6 of the stirrup,.the upper face of each of said plates being serrated or roughened as at 10. A portion. of each of the plates 8 beneath the serrated or roughened portion 10 thereof is engaged with the upper face of the tread plate 6 of the stirrup 5 on the one side of the recess 7 thereof, while the flanges 9 are engaged with the lower face of the tread plate 6 as advantageously illustrated in Fig. 3.
In order to retain the plates 8 in engagement with the tread plate 6 of the stirrup 5, suitable resilient means 11 are provided which in the present instance comprise a plurality of springs each of which is formed from a single strand of wire, having the one end of each engaged with one of the plates 8 while the opposite end of each is engaged with the opposite plate, an intermediate portion of each of said wires being helically wound as indicated at 12 so as to normally retain the plates 8 in engagement with the portions of the tread plate 6 of the stirrup. v
In Fig. 4 wherein is shown a variant form of my improved device, a sheet metal plate 13 is provided which has the opposite ends thereof flexed so as to provide parallel arms 1d, each of which has a flange 15 formed thereon which is provided by turning one of the longitudinal edges thereof upwardly into right-angled relation with the body, the
opposite longitudinal edge of each of said arms has formed thereon elongated tread plates 16 which preferably extend beyond the ends of said arms and have the upper faces thereof roughened or serrated as indicated at 17. The one end of each of said arms 14- being connected through the medium of a curved strap 18, said strap being provided by flexing the opposite ends thereof, as above pointed out, said plate being made of a suitable resilient metal, in order that the flanges 15 and plates 16, which extend in parallel relation to each other, will be snugly engaged with the upper and lower faces of the tread plate 6 of the stirrup.
The arms lt are snugly engaged with the plate 6, in view of the fact that the plate in this instance is made of a suitable spring metal, the arms 14 thereof being provided by flexing the opposite ends of the strap 13 as above pointed out, thereby causing the then engaged in the recess 7, thelfianges 9 and the body portion of each of said straps being engaged with the lower and upper faces respectively of said tread plate 6, and 1 pressure released therefrom, thereby al1owing the springs 11 to expand causing each of the plates 8 to be snugly engaged with the portion of the tread plate 6 as illustrated to advantage in Fig. 8. r
In using the form as illustratedin Fig. 4,
.the free ends of the armsl l are flexed inwardly and the deviceinserted in the recess 7, the flanges 15 of the arms engaging with the lower face of the tread plate 6 of the stirrup while the elongated plates 16 engage with the upper face thereof. As soon as p'ressureflis released from the free ends of the arms it is obvious that the same will eX- pandoutwardly due to the resiliency of the metal, causing a positive engagement of the device with the tread plate 6. It will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general and preferred embodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in details of construction,
