GEORGE C. W YLAND, WILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
CHEOKRElN-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 724,070, dated March 31, 1903.
Application filed December 17, 1902- Serial No. 13 5,532. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE O. WYLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVilliamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Checkrein- Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide simple and effective means for securely holding the checkrein-loop in engagement with the check-hook upon the harnesssaddle; and it consists in a safety-loop for checkreins constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view of my improved safety-loop, showing the check-hook in dotted lines and the loop in engagement therewith; Fig. 2, a longitudinal vertical section thereof; Fig. 3, a plan view of the metallic portion of the device, showing the loop and cushion removed therefrom.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a suitable ring or other means for attaching thereto the checkrein of the harness which is common in checkrein-loops, and therefore any preferred means may be einployed for making a connection between the checkrein and loop, as found most desirable. This ring A is formed with arms B, extending out therefrom and parallel with each other and having at their extremities suitable spurs a, and. between said arms is a Wedge-shaped bearing 0. Projecting from the outer sides of the parallel arms B are lugs b, which have their extremities reduced in diameter to receive washers c in holding upon the lugs the loop D, which loop may be of leather or other suitable material, as found desirable. After the loop D has been placed over the lugs b the washers are placed upon the reduced ends (1, and afterward said ends are headed in the usual manner, thereby securely fastening the loop to the arms, which loop is for the purpose of engaging with the usual check-hook used upon harness-saddles, as shown in dotted lines of the drawings.
A suitable cushion E, of felt, rubber, or any other preferred soft or yielding material found best adapted to the purpose, is held be tween the arms B, its outer end projecting beyond the ends of arms and adapted to bear with frictional contact against the checkhook, and thereby prevent the loop D from becoming accidentally disengaged therefrom.
The cushion E is forked or bifurcated at its rear end to correspond with the form of the wedge-shaped bearing with which it engages, and the cushion is further held in position between the arm by bending the spurs 0. inwardly to engage the material of the cushion, the wedge-shaped bearing and the spurs providing means that will securely and effectively hold the cushion in place.
In describing the details of construction many changes or modifications may be made without in any manner affecting the essen-- tial features of the invention, and any such changes or modification as would come within ordinary mechanical judgment may be resorted to Without departing from the principle of the invention. a
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is r 1. A checkrein-fastener, comprising a device having independent parallel arms, means for connecting the check rein thereto, a Wedge shape bearing between the arms at the juncture thereof, lugs upon the outer side of the arms, a suitable loop engaging therewith, and a cushion having its rear end bifurcated to engage the wedge-shape bearing, and suitable means for securing the cushion to the parallel arms, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A checkrein-fastener, consisting of par allel arms with means for attaching the check rein thereto, a loop connected to the arms, a wedge-shaped bearing between the arms and spurs upon the extremities of the arms, and a cushion engaging the bearing and spurs to hold the cushion between the arms, as set forth. r
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE O WYLAND.
