Description
E. D. WEBB. REIN HOLDER.
(No Model.)
No. 546,084 Patented Sept. 10, 18.95.
AN DREW BLRMIM'I PHOYO-LITHOWSHIN GTON.D.C.
ramas artnr arten@ EDWIN D. WEBB, OF YPSILANTI, MICHGAN.
REINBHOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,084, dated September 10, 1895.
Application filed July 29, 1 8 95.
To all whom it may concern:Y
Be it known that I, EDWIN D. WEBB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ypsilanti, in the county of Washtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Rein-Holder, of which the following is a speci ication.
The invention relates to improvements in rein-holders.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device adapted to be readily secured to a dashboard and capable 'of readily receiving and holding the driving-reins and of permitting the same to be quickly detached when desired.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out inthe claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a rein-holder constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawlngs.
l designates a rein-holder, comprising a base 2, having a central raised portion or fulcrum 3, and a spring or resilient plate 4, constructed of resilient material, and disposed longitudinally of the base and centrally secured to the same by a bolt 5 or other suitable fastening device, and having its portions at opposite sides of the fulcrum or support separated from the adjacent portions of the base to provide rein-receiving recesses.
The fulcrum or support 3 is provided with a transverse groove 6, receiving a transverse rib 7, arranged on the inner face of the spring 4, whereby the latter is prevented from turning on the fastening device 5.
The base is composed of two sections or plates 8 and 9, secured together by fastening devices l0 at their ends, and the front plate is provided at opposite sides of the fulcrum with longitudinally-disposed openings 1l, tapering in width or provided with oppositely- Serial No. 557,431. (No model.)
inclined sides to receive longitudinally-dis 5o posed strips 12, of rubber or other elastic mate rial. The strips of rubber are slightlytapered in cross-section, whereby they are confined in the openings by the sections 0r plates of the base, and they create sufficient friction to hold the reins securely.
The ends of the spring are rounded, and its lower face is slightly convex, and the ends are bent outward slightly to facilitate the in sertion of the reins.
The fulcrum is formed by the bend in the outer or front section, which is slightly enlarged at its outer face, and the back or inner section is curved or bent to conform to the configuration of the inner face of the front section. i
1t will be seen that the rein-holder is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction, that it is capable of enabling the driving-reins to be readily introduced in it, and that it will permit them to be quickly disengaged from it when desired.
Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Vhat I claim is- A rein holder, comprising a base composed of two sections or plates and provided with a central fulcrum or support, the front plate or section being provided at opposite sides of the fulerum with longitudinal openings, the longitudinal strips of elastic material detachably secured in the openings of the base by the sections or plates and projecting through the openings, and the springs centrally secured to the fulcrum or support and extending over the elastic strips and forming rein receiving recesses, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWIN D. WEBB.
