TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: y
Be it known that I, O.. GATE, of Boston, in the county ofSuilolk, and State of-Massachusetts, have invented a. new and improved Sash-Fastener; and I dohcreby declare that the following isn full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and'use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The fastener embraced in the present invention is so constructedand arranged in its several parts as to be simple, durable, strong, and effective, and when fastened, secure against being opened from the outside, the construction boing such as to enable lthe use of springs to be entirely dispensed with.
In the 'accompanying plate of drawings, my improved saslrfastener' s illustrated- Figure 1 being-ja plan or top view of the same,^showing itfas 'applied to a block of wood, and with the parts Acomposing it fastened. e
Figures 3, 4, and 5, detail vviewslof the yvarious parts composing the fastener detachedfrom each other. Similar letters-of reference indicate like parts. f A, in the drawings, represents my improved sash-fastener, which is made. in t'wo parts, B and C, one, B, of
Figure 2, atransverse section, taken in the plane of thelinea: sv, g 1.
which is to be applied to the lower sash, and the other, C, to the upper sash, in such positions, relatively, that when the two sashes are closed they will lie-directly opposite to each other. y
The part B, to thc lower sash, consists of a plato, D, by which, through screws or other suitable fastenings,
it is secured to the lowerA sash. To the upper side of this plate D, another plate, E, is secured, that is raised.
above the same by a ange, F, along the front edgeC, leaving an opening, H, between tbc back I and endor side, J, edges. K, a slot, in upper plate E, extending from thefront to the back edges thereof, or nearlyso, through which slot extends the stem L of a knob, M. N, a cross-arm, to inner end of stem L, upon the under side ot' upper plate E. In cross-arm N, extending in the direction of its length, arc-slots, a. The slots a are in the same line with each other, but are separated at o.
O, two arxns,`each bent up at one end, and at the other` bent or curved, with a stud or pin, C,'xed inthe outer end. These arms are hung att to a fulcrum-pin of -the lower plate, D, and by their pins e are engaged with the slotsa'of thecros's-armto the spindle, so'that by moving the knob M forward or'baekwardin-the slot to the plato E, such arms are either swung out into lines parallclwith'each other and thc said slot, or into one and the same direction, or nearly so, or, in other words, in a line at right angles `to the said slot, the arms, when in a parallel direction, being brought by their bent-up ends about the rear side, R, to tho raised portion, S, (under the top-plate T, of which they pass,) to the part of the attachment applied to the upper sash, where they arefastcnod, as will be now described. v
U, a slide, arranged to move upon the under side of the plate T, being guided between ways, J, of the same, so as to move in a 4direction toward the rear side It to said plate T. Thisslide, U,'is out outiu its centre, and within and against such c ut-out portion acts the cam or arm V, to a spindle, W, arranged to'turn in the plate T, this spindle being provided with n milled head, X, suitable for turning it. The cam V is-of suitable combined together, substantially as and sofas to operate as described.
shape, that when turned either tol the right or left, it will throw out or dra-w in the slide from the back edge to the plate,""as the case may be, the slide, when out, by its end`shoulders or oorn'ers,'Z, setting by the bent-up ends of the arms O, if in the position shown in iig. 1, and, consequently, there holding or securing them.
From the above description of my improved fastener, it is plainly obvious thatv First, no springs are needed. V 1
Second, it is simple, eiiieient, and most perfect and secure. I
Third, it cannot be unfastened from the outside, except the sash-frames or the glasses thereof be broken or cut sueiently for thc person to grasp the fastening.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isp y, v A fastener for window-sashes, ttc., composed of an arm or arms, O, and a slide, U, when arranged and Q; GATE( Witnesses: f
