To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, CIIARLEs EHRENFELD, a citizen of the United States, residingl at Pasadena, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a certain new and Improved Fastening Device for Implements, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for holding limplements on their handles--such, for instance, as picks, broadaxes, adzes, and other tools or implements having' a separate handle or handles formed separate Jfrom the body portion or head of the implement.
The object of the invention is to provide simple, cheap, and durable-means by which such an implement may be positively aiiixed on its handle.
A further object of the invention is to provide such meansin such 'form that if the handle becomes worn in the eye of the implementhead the handle may be readily adjusted therein to'takeup such wear.
With these and such other objects and ends in view as hereinafter appear from the detailed description of construction the invention consists in general in an implement embodying a head having an eye or socket for the reception oit' the end of the handle, a retaining jaw or. jaws operating in connection with said socket, and means for clamping said jaws on said handle, thereby preventing the movement ot' the handle in the socket or eye of the head of the implement and in effect forming a continuation of such eye or socket.
The invention will be more readily under` stood by reference to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in Which- Figure I is a side view of a pick provided with means fastening the handle in place embodying my invention. Fig. II is a longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. III is a side view of a slightly-modified form. Fig. IV is a longitudinal section view thereof. Fig. V is another slightly-modified form, the pick herein shown being the same pick used in streetwork, while the picks shown in Figs. I and II are miners picks. In this form the clamping-ring 9 remains the same.
As illustrated in Figs. V and VI, the invention is applied to an ordinary pick used in streetwork, in which the socket is tapered, so that the handle is tapered and slipped through the head, and the taper of the handle forms the ordinary means for holding the pick-head in place. With this form of pick I may use either adaptation of my invention, the clamping-ring 9 remaining identical and the jaws 5 being of the form shown in Fig. I or having two branches, as shown in Fig. V, and flared outwardly and then extending inwardly and inturned to provide projections 10, adapted to fit in holes 11, provided in the head of the pick. This construction being similar to that shown in Fig. IV or as shown in Figs. VI and VIII, the head of the pick may be provided with outwardly-flared portions 12, forming sockets in which the jaws 5 may rest, the outturned ends of the jaws fitting in sockets in the flared portion of the head, thus embodying the adaptation shown in Fig. I.
In Fig. IX, I have shown another adaptation of my invention. With this form the jaws 5 may be either of the forms shown in Figs. II or IV; but instead of using the clam ping-ring 9 I provide the jaws with the elongated slots 13 and clamp the same together on the handle by means of a bolt 14, passing through the handle, the head 15 of the bolt bearing against one of the jaws and the nut16 bearing against the other jaw. With this construction any wear may be readily taken up.
In place of providing the jaws 5 with shanks or projections 7 or 10 I may make the upper ends thereof wedge-shaped, as shown in Fig. XV, so that as the jaws are' slipped through the sockets formed by the offsets or flanged portions 6 of the head and pulled downward therein the same wedge therein. I provide the outer surfaces of the lower ends of the jaws with serrations, so that the spring-rings 9 are held from slipping by springing into the serrations.
Asshown in Figs. II and IV, the serrated shanks of the jaws are tapered away from the head of the tool, so that the resilient clamping-ring 9 may be driven over the shanks as far as is necessary to hold them tightly in place.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, isM
1. The combination with an implementhead, provided with a socket adapted to receive a handle, of a handle therefor, jaws hav ing projecting ends taking into said head, the shanks of said jaws having tapered portions extending out on the handle and provided at their ends with means adapted to take into said handle, and a clamping-ring adapted t0 spr ng over the tapered portions of said Shanks to hold said jaws in place.
2. A fastening device for implement-handles comprising in combination with the implement-head, provided with a socket in which the handle is received, of a handle therefor, jaws embracing said head and extending from said head onto said handle, said jaws provided with means for engaging said handle, and with serrated tapered outer surfaces, and a resilient clamping-ring adapted to encircle said jaws and handle to hold said jaws in place.
3. The combination, with an implementhead provided with a socket adapted to receive a handle, of a handle therefor, jaws having projecting portions taking into said head, the shanks of said jaws provided with means for engaging said handle, said Shanks tapered from said head and provided with serrations, and a resilient ring adapted to embrace said shanks and spring into said serrations.
4. The combination, with an implementhead provided with a socket adapted to receive a handle, of a handle'therefor, jaws having' projections taking into said headfthe Shanks of said jaws having serrated outer portions extending out on the handle and provided at their ends with means adapted to take into said handle, and a clamping-ring adapted to embrace said Shanks and spring into said serrations.
5. The combination, with an implementhead provided with a socket adapted to receive a handle, of a handle therefor, jaws having projections taking into said head and handle, the shanks of said jaws extending out on the handle and tapered, a resilient ring having a smooth inner periphery and `adapted to be driven over the taper, and means for holding the ring from slipping.
