To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. SCHLEHR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolt-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in bolt holders or wrenches.
One object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of bolt holder by means of which round headed bolts or other round smooth objects may be securely held.
Another object is to provide a tool of this character having an adjustably fulcrumed jaw whereby the expansion of the jaws and the capacity of the tool may be greatly increased.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of one side of my improved bolt holders adjusted to its shortest capacity; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the opposite side showing the jaws adjusted to their greatest capacity. Fig. 3 is a front edge view; Fig. 1 is a rear edge view of the holder; Fig. 5 is an inner side view of the upper portion of the inner jaw member of the holder showing the shape and arrangement of the aperture for the pivot bolt of the jaws; Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the pivot bolt.
I Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the outer jaw member of the holder and 2 denotes the inner jaw member. The outer member 1 comprises a jaw 3 preferably having a rounded or oval shaped outer surface and a longitudinally curved inner working surface on which is formed a series of teeth or serrations 4 extending transversely of the jaw to adapt the to obtain a firm grip on the object with which it is engaged. The free end of the jaw 3 is curved downwardly and has formed therein an inverted V-shaped notch 5 which provides two points or teeth 6 the purpose'of which will be hereinafter described.
On the opposite end of the jaw member 1 tended to form a curved handle 8. In the flat portion of the member is formed a series of connected pivot holes 9 of which there may be any desired number, three of the same being shown in the present instance. The pivot holes 9 provide for the adjustment of the outer jaw'with respect to the inner jaw as will be hereinafter more fully described. 1
The inner jaw member 2 comprises a flat body portion corresponding to the flat body portion of the outer jaw member with which the inner jaw member is pivotally and adjustably engaged by means of a pivot bolt 10. The bolt 10 has its opposite sides flattened as shown at 11 and is adapted to be engaged with an oblong bolt hold 12 formed in the flat portion of the inner jaw member near its outer end as shown. The bolt 10 when engaged with the bolt hold 12 will be securely held against rotation and when engaged with the pivot holes 9 in the outer jaw member provides a bearing or pivot on which said outer jaw is opened and closed.
On the front edge and at the upper end of the flattened portion of the jaw member 2 is formed an inner jaw 13 which is offset from one side of the flattened portion of the member and preferably has a rounded or oval shaped outer surface as shown. The inner or working face of the jaw 13 is preferably flat and has formed therein a series of transversely arranged teeth 14 which coact with the teeth 4 in the jaw 3. At the free end of the jaw 13 is formed a centrally disposed inwardly extending tooth 15 which is adapted to coact with the teeth 6 formed in the free end of the jaw 3 whereby when the jaws are engaged with an object the latter will be gripped at three points whereby said object will be securely held by the tool. It will thus be seen that by forming the tooth in the manner shown two oppositely disposed shoulders are formed on the jaw which will prevent the bolt or other object from accidentally slipping from its gripped position should the jaws of the wrench become slightly released. The inner end of the flat body portion of the jaw member 2 is extended to form a curved handle 16 which coacts with the handle 8 to bring the jaws into forcible engagement with the object to be held.
It will be noted that the oval or pointed outer surface of the inner and outer jaws permits the same to obtain a firm grip on a round bolt head and by providing said jaws with three coacting bolt engaging points or teeth the bolt will be firmly held when gripped in the jaws. This arrangement or construction of the toothed outer edges of the jaws permits the same to be firmly engaged with any rounded or spherical bodies and to firmly hold the latter. The teeth 4 and 14 on the inner working surface of the jaws provide for the use of the tool in gripping and holding pipes or cylindrical objects as well as square or rectangular objects. The peculiar construction and arrangement of the jaws and the teeth thereon adapts the tool for a great variety of purposes and a wide range of usefulness. The adjustable connection between the outer and inner jaws whereby the pivotal engagement of the former with the pivot pin in the latter may be shifted greatly increases the'capacity of thetool as will be readily Y understood.
From the foregoing description taken in a tion will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Var1ous changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A wrench comprising pivotally connected members, which are provided with gripping jaws having transversely disposed teeth, the working face of one jaw being concaved and terminating in a V-shaped end, forming two teeth, the working face of the other jaw being substantially fiat and terminating in a single centrally disposed tooth at its end forming oppositely positioned contacting shoulders, whereby an object may be firmly gripped between the teeth upon the receiving outer ends of the jaws.
