Description
LEWIS J1. SGHAEEER, OF' PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 76,252, dated .March 3l, 1868.
IMPsovsn CURTAIN-FIXTURE 'ilgdphule linfettati tu in time epttrrs @mi mit milling @zur utiliz sin.
TO ALL WHOM I'l MAYGQNGERN:
Be it known that I, LEWIS'J. SCHAEFER, of. the city of Philadelphia, and. State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Curtain-Fixture; and'I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exnctdcsoription ol' tbesame, reference being had to .the accompanying drawingfan'd to the letters of reference markedithereon, making part of this'specilication, vin whioh 'Figure 1 is a front view, and
rFigure Zie a side view. 1.
Similar letteren-fer to similar` parts in the twovviews.
A is a cageor freine, which .is rectangular inshape, and open behind. BB are extensions or jamb-plates ut the back of the cage, and aretle means whereby the frame or cage is fixed to thejamb of a window or-other suitable place. C isla vertical rod, which takes, through an lopening in the top of the cage, into therecess or hollow` formedhy itsends and sides.. D is a spiral spring on the said'rod C. Its ends are-contained between -the upper end ofthe cage 4andthe projectionsjon *theA end'of the rod. The projections d a are two helical feathers, fixed on opposite parts of the surface of th'e cylindrical axis or rod C, and which work in the spiral f cha-nnel'ofjthespring Dinthe same rannerthat' a carpenter-s screw Works in a pieceiof ivood.
.The rod C is inserted into the spring by entering. the. helical feathers irrt-he spiral' grooveior opening ofthe` springand, turning-the `rodin theiproper dir'eotion, it screws orzworksdown until the feathers gain the end of the spring, andthe cord-hook E, o n the'upp'er end 'ofthe rod, faces in Vthel required direction. By the applica'- tion of the helical feathers to the rod, the spring D is incre secnrely xed to it, andthe rod is made adjustable in the' directionofjts length, for,'by turning it continually in one direction or the other, it risesi or lo'iicrs,
through the medinm of the 'helical feathers taking into, the groove of the spring.
,To adjust the cord-roller` to the `Jdxture, the rod C must be raised, by pressure applied to the hook E, until the spiral spring acquires eirpanding forcelsulioient'to keep the shade from lowering by its own'weight, atten-v `tion also being given tothe' degree of 'tension of` the cord, to keep it from abrading on the hook-D.
What I claim as mydnvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
'.lheeomhination'of the rod with its projections a a', or their equivalent, and thespring- D, so arranged that the adjustment of the lixture' is e'ected by tlirning the said projections betweenthe coils ofthe spring, substantially as herein specified. i I
vIn testimo'nynwhereof,` I hereunto sign my name to this specication in presence of two subscribing-witnesses.
