Description

JARRZ RURNs, or NRW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVED WINDOW-SHADE FIXTURE.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 94,866, dated September 14, 1869.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAREZ BURNs, of the l city, county, and State of New York, haveV invented a new and useful Improvement in Shade-Fixtures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use thesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specication, in which drawing- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of. this invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on a larger scale than the previous figure.
Similar letters indicate corresponding` parts. This invention consists in the arrangement of one or more triangular wedge-shaped stops placed into a cam-case which is attached to and revolves with 'a shade-roller, in combination with -a stationary bearing-pin provided with a square or polygonal p art and secured to one end of a spring, the other end of which is attached to the shade-roller in such a manner that when the shade or curtain is drawn down the spring is wound up, and ready to carry the shade up again automatically, and
' if the shade is allowed to pass up slowly, the
triangular wedge drops down and forms a positive stop, whereby the shade is retained in the desired position, but when the shade is allowed to follow the action of its spring rapidly, the wedge has not time to drop down and act as a stop, and the shade is rolled up and returned to its original position.
A represents the shade-roller, which is provided at one end with a round gudgeon, a, on which the roller revolves. The opposite end of the shade-roller is bored out to receive the spring b, which is fastened at its inner end to the roller, and at its outer end to the pin o, which is made with a square or polygonal part, d, to engage with the wedge shaped cams e, as will be presently explained, and which is also provided with a round bearing, f, and with a flat end, g.
The round bearing f tits into a plate, h, which is firmly secured to the end of the sh aderoller, and it forms the journal for the roller, while the flat end g of said pin engages with a slotted bracket, t', which is attached to the window frame or casing, so that, when the roller is revolved in the proper direction, the pin will remain stationary and the spring b is wound up, and if the roller is released, it is carried back to its original position by the action of the sprin g.
The wedge-shaped cams e are placed loose ly into recesses kin the cam-case l, which is secured to the end of the roller A under the plate It, and which is provided with a hole in its center, to allow the pin c to pass freely through it.
The shade B is rolled up on the roller A in suchv a direction that by pulling the shade down the spring B is wound up, and the cams e are triangular, and placed in such a position into the cam-case that when the roller revolves in direction of arrow 1, Fig. 2, said cams do not obstruct its motion, but, if the roller is revolved in the direction of arrow 2, the short sides of the cams turn down upon the iiat sides of the square or polygonal part ot the pin c, and prevent a further motion of the roller.
`It' the shade is pulled down, therefore, the cams will not act, but if the roller is allowed 'to follow the action of its spring e, and to return, the cams act as stops, provided the motion of the roller is slow enough to give said cams time to act. If the roller in its returnV motion is allow to move rapidly, the cams are kept in the outer ends of their recesses by the centrifugal force, and they do not act as stops.
By this arrangement, the construction of the automatic shade-roller and stops is materially facilitated, the cams and cam-case can be easily cast, they require no fitting, the cams can be dropped into their recesses without loss of time, and they act directly against .acting against .the hat surfaces of the pin c,
which forms the journal for one end of the roller A, all combined and arranged as herein shown and described.
