Description
AIiVAVN STUDLEY, OF N'TICK, MASSACHUSETTS.
Lafer@ Patent No. 75,072, dated March 3,1868.
IMPROVED CURTAIN-FIXTURE.
illge tlptnle reftmhtn in tiges: Zitat rtent mit making part nf tti same.
*ro ALL PERSONS 'ro WHOM THESE PRESENTS MAE COME:
Bo it known that I, ALvnN STUDLEY, ot Natick, in the county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts; have made a new. and-useful invention, having reference to Curtain orWindowShade Fixtures; and Ido hereby declare the same to be fully .described in `the following' specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of Iwhi eh v Figure 1 is a front elevation of a window-curtain or shade havingmy improved fixtures, and being applied to a window-frame. n
Figure 2 is a horizontal section, taken through the curtain-roller and its supportsv.
In such` drawings, A denotes .the curtain or shade, B the window-frame, C the curtain-roller, and D the cord for revolving the roller for the purpose of Winding` `the said curtain or shade thereupon. The said cord has one end fastened `to a 'cylindrical barrel, a, projecting from the roller, and being of a diameter somewhat less than that of the roller. This barrel extends concentrically into a cylindrical-case, E, and has a small journal, b, to enter and .turn in a hole or bearing, r, made in the head, c, of such case.` The said case has a long slot, oZ, made through it at bottom, and also has arms, e e, projecting from it, through which screwsff pass, for securing the case or its arms to the window-frame. The cord D passes through the slot, the case and slot serving to guide the cord, and prevent `its coils from overriding, and also from becoming wedged at'thc extremities of the barrel. Theother end of thecurtain-roller is provided with a journal, g, to enter 'a bearing or cylindrical cavity, h, formed in the head, z', ot' a. turning-arm, G, such arm being hinged to a carrier or Asnpp'orter, H, so as to be -capable of being turned horizontally. At its inner end it works againsta spring, 1::i`1xeel14 in the carrier, and arranged therein and with respect to the arm, .in manner as exhibited in fig. 2. .lhe spring serves to hold the arm -and bearing in their normal positions with respect to the journal of the curtain-roller. The carrier is to be fastened to the' window-frame by screws, s sor other proper devices. y
By turning the arm and bearing back, away from the end of theroller, the bearing will betmovediout of connection with the roller, so as to enable the latter to bewithdrawn from the other bearing, or inserted therein, as occasion may require, whether to takedown or put up the curtain and its roller. l 1
I am awarethat a journal of a curtain-roller has been arranged so as not only to' slide endwise in a socket made in the roller, but, against a helical spring placed in' such socket. Itherefore make no claim to such; but
What I claim as my invention in the curtain-fixture hereinbefore mentioned is as follows, viz:
1. I claim a.` socketed head, z', jointed or hinged so as to be capable of being turned laterally against and be held in place by a spring, k. l' i 2. I claim the window-curtain-roller end-bearing, as composed of the eylindrically-sockcted head z', thevarm G, the spring k, and the carrier H, arranged so as to be applied to the curtain-roller and'window-frame, and to operate with respect to the roller substantially as specific 3. I also claim the combination of tbe cylindrical case E, having abearing, 1, at its outer` end, with the roller C, having a shoulder, 2:, for the inner end of the case to rest against, and a journal, g, to enter the bearing or socket i of the head, z'.
4. VI also claim the combination of the cylindrical journal and roller with a pivtedor hinged socket, to move laterally, substantially as and for the purpose described.
ALVAN STUDLEY.
