Letters-Patent No. 76,186, dated M'arch 31,1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN Monner- PAcKINe NECK-rms. f
dln Sunnis nient tu in that teiters; ttnrt mn mating grunt ligands.
TO ALL WHOM'IT MAY COlICEItN--:I
Beit known that I, WILLIAM H. HART, Jr., ofthe city and county of Philadelphia, and .State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented a new and improved Mode of Packing Cravate.; and I do hereby declare the following to 'be a full, clear, and exact description of the same; sufficient to enable othersto'full'y understand and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective viewof a cravat-box illustrating my invention.
Figure 2 is aview of a fragment of'the card 'or boi-bottom, exhibiting the method of holding'the cravate uponv the same. i l I Y Y Figures 3 and 4 are detached views of the cardsV or box-bottoms, illustrating modifications in the method of applying the elastic fasteningsor cords; f i y Figure 5 is a'view showing the method of forming the body or frame of the box.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Heretofore the cards, backs,or box-bottoms forfholding neck-ties have been'merely slit, .so as to admit the ends of the neck-tie supporters. Aside from the insecurity which attendsthis common method, the latteris open to the objection thatthe ends of thenecktie supporters necessarily protruding through andprojecting from the reverse side of the card or holder, are liable to injury fromv objects with' which they are liable to be brought in v contact.
My invention consists chiedy in so constructing the holder, whether a mere card or a boi-bottom, and applying elastic fastenings or cords thereto, that the crava'ts are wholly confined or contained upon that side of the lholder where they are held `or exhibited, the ends notbeing allowed to project from Ithe reverse side in the manner above alluded to. v
The invention furtherconsists in constructing the box with supporting ledges in lieu of a permanent bottom, so that a holder used as an exhibiting-card maybe made to constitute the bottom of a box when desired.
In the drawing, A may representa cravat-holder for exhibiting. or 'other purposes, the same being either a box-bottom, as shown in iig. 1, (said box having a transparent top or cover, if desired,) or a separate show-l eard, as shown in figs. 3 and 4. Y
i I produce ka. number of tongues,'a a a, by making corresponding incisions b b b in the card-board; It must be noticed that these tongues possess a certain amount of elasticity, and it' the side ends of the neckstie supporters were introduced into the openings b b, the tongues will bear or press the supportersagainst the helder A and retain them in place. f
Single bands or rings, B, ot" rubber or other suitable material, are applied to each tongue a, as shown in fig. l, in which case the two hands of'thc two opposing. or paired tongues', a, serve toafford bitching or fastening-l loops for the ends of cach neck-tie supporter, and as more clearly-represented in Iig. -2.
Instead of theindividual bands for each tongue, a, a single cord, B, preferably elastic, but non-elastic when' desired, may be passed around all the tongues, or any desired number thereof, so as to aii'ord means for fasten-v ing any desired number of cravats.
Fig. shows a modification in which the'eard or holder is simply perforated withsmall holes, and in which a single band may be used at each fastening-point, or a. single cord made to form the desired plurality of fastening-loops.`
It will be seen that each of the above methods of applying the fastening-bands or cords to the holder', enables the ends of the neck-tie supporters to be confined in position upon` the same side ofthe holder at which the neck-ties are exhibited, the ends being thus preserved from the injury to which they are subjectedwhen allowed to protrude, as above mentioned,
The other feature of my invention is illustrated in' g. 5. It consists in providing the body' or frame, D, of
the cravat-box with ledges or supporting-strips, d, in lieu of a permanent bottom, the said frame, 86e., being. suitably out and shaped out of pasteboard or cardboard. Thus, whena box is to be packed complete for transportation or otherwise; a bottom, A, which has been in use as a holder or show-card, is inserted within the 'box D, and rests upon-the ledges.' Thisfeature of my invention is a medium of economy, inasmuch as the card or holder lis madeto fuill the double function of a, show-card, thus avoiding the expense attending the application of n permanent bottom to tbe box. A I I Having thus described my invention, wliat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. The holderA, provided with thefyielding tongues a, for sdpporting andexbibitingthe neck-tie or omvat, substantially as described. .A v v y 2. The'combination, with a. omvat-holder or show-cord, of one or more bands, cords, or other fastenings, whereby theucrzwats muy be securely retained ih position without protruding through tile card, substantially asl described. v v v x 3. The construction of the box-body or frame with ledges` or supports d, .to adopt the show-card or holder to be used use. bottom to the box, substantially as described.
To the above, I have signed my name, this 20th day of February, 1868.
WILLIAM H. HART, JR. Witnesses: M
