To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PETER BERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Enderlin, in the county of Ransom and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat Packing-Rings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention is an improved hat packing ring especially adapted for use by being placed in a cap, soft h at or other like article, to keep the same in shape when packed or exhibited on the shelves or counters of a store and to prevent the cap or hat to which it is applied from getting crushed and out of shape, and becoming shop worn, a further object of the invention being to provide an improved packing ring which also serves to indicate the size of the cap or hat in which the same is placed, the invention consisting in the construction and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawingsFigure 1 is a perspective view of a packing ring constructed in accordance with my invention showing the same in use in a cap, the latter being shown in inverted position. Fig. 2 is a detail elevation of my improved packing ring showing the same straightened out. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line a-a of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar view on the plane indicated by the line bb of Fig. 2.

In accordance with my invention I construct my hat packing ring from a strip of pasteboard or other suitable flexible and cheap fabric or material. The body 1 of my improved packing ring is of a length somewhat exceeding the circumference of a hat or cap of the largest size and is of such suitable breadth and is adapted to be bent in the form of an open ring with its ends disposed in overlapping relation and placed in a cap or hat. The body strip 1 of my improved packing ring is provided with a re inforoing spring strip 2 which is here shown as a comparatively narrow and thin strip of sheet steel the length of which corresponds with that of the body strip 1. This reinforcing and spring strip may be attached to the flexible body strip 1 by any suitable means and in any suitable manner.

For the purpose of this specification, the spring and reinforcing strip is shown on the outer side of the body strip 1 at a point about midway between the side edges thereof and covered and secured to the said body strip by means of a cover strip 3 which may be made of paper or any other suitable flexible fabric or material, the same being preferably pasted on the outer side of the body strip 1 and also on the outer side of the spring and reinforcing strip so as to firmly attach the latter to the former.

My improved packing ring is also provided at a suitable distance from one end thereof with a scale 4, the divisions or units of which are numbered and indicate the various sizes of caps or hats. Coincident with this scale 4 is a series of indicating openings 5 each of which alines with one of the graduations of the scale 4:. The said indicating openings are cut transversely in the body strip 1., and expose the spring and reinforcing strip 2, and the width of each of these openings is equal to that of one half the space between one graduation and-another on the scale 4.

It will be understood that when my improved ring is placed in a cap or hat, with one end overlapping the other, the end of the ring which is exposed to view at the inside of the hat or cap will lie at some point on the scale 4 according to the size of the cap or hat which the ring is placed, and will indicate at a glance the size and number of the cap or hat, the spring and reinforcing strip serving to expand the packing ring diametrically and cause the same to correspond exactly with the size of the cap or hat. Moreover, it will be understood that my improved ring serves to stiffen and support the cap or .hat and to keep the same from becoming crushed, from getting out of shape, and presenting the appearance of being shop worn.

My improved packing ring may be instantly applied to a cap or hat, and as expeditiously removed therefrom, and will be found extremely convenient for use by traveling salesmen in exhibiting hats and caps which they offer for sale by sample. Moreover, it will be obvious that my packing ring may be stretched out flat and that a number of them can be compactly disposed in such position and Very readily stored as for instance in a traveling case, and readily car ried from place to place.

I claim 1. A hat packing ring to be placed in and removed from a hat and embodying a flexible strip having overlapping disconnected ends and an expanding spring strip extending longitudinally and secured to one side of the body strip said expanding spring also having overlapping disconnected ends.

2. A hat packing ring to be placed in and removed from a hat and embodying a flexible relatively stilt body strip having overlapping disconnected ends and a size indicating scale extending from one of the ends, an expanding spring strip extending longitudinally and secured to one side of the body strip, said expanding spring strip being disposed medially on one side of the body strip, and a cover strip, covering the expanding spring strip and secured to the body strip said expanding spring also having overlapping disconnected ends.
