PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN L. THOMPSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BOOK-MARK.
:ZPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 738,376, dated September 8, 1903.
Application filed $eptember 3, 1902. Serial No. 121,942. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN L. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Book'Markspf which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved book-mark which may be detachably connected with the back of a book and conveniently retained inplace for use and by means of which any page of a book containing any number of pages may be easily and conveniently marked for reference at any time.
The invention is fully disclosedin the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of myimprovement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a book with one side of the cover open and with my improved mark connected therewith; Fig. 2, a transverse section of the bookmark onthe line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a back-view of a portion of the book-mark.
In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown a book with one side of the cover open, as shown at a, and in the practice of my invention I provide a book-mark comprising a plate 1'), composed of cardboard, celluloid, aluminium, or any suitable material, and which is shown in the drawingsas rectangular in form,.but may be round or of any other desired shape. The plate I) is preferably composed of two parts, a back portion b and a front portion b having a circular central opening b and around the circular opening b are arranged in four separate series the numerals from 1 to 9 and the character 0, said separate series of numerals each occupying one-quarter of the space around the opening 5 Pivoted centrally of the plate 19*, as shown at c, are four pointers d, and the ends of these pointers are preferably pointed and extend beneath the inner edge of the plate 5 which is raised, as shown at b in Fig. 2, for this purpose, and the object of this construction is to prevent the accidental and too free turning of said pointers, the passing of the points of said pointers under the inner edge of the plate b at 11 serving to produce an amount of friction which will hold said pointers against accidental turning. As thus constructed it will be seen that any page of the book may be easily marked, all that is necessary being to turn the pointers, which is done by hand, so as to indicate the required numerals, and by means of a book-mark constructed .as herein described any page from 1 to 9999 may be marked.
It will be apparent that my improved bookmark or the construction thereof is not limited to the exact numerals arranged in the separate series; nor is four series of numerals necessary, as a less number of said numerals may be employed and also a less number of series; nor is my invention limited to the use of four pointers, as four pointers and four series of numerals are only necessary when the pages of the book are one thousand or over.
In the form of construction shown I connect with the back of the plate I) or of the supplemental plate 1) slides c, this connection being made by means of keepers, and these slides are provided at their ends with lugs 6 which are adapted to engage the upper and lower edges of the cover a, and by means of this construction the book-mark may be quickly and easily connected with the back of the book, the slides e being held against too free amovement by friction. It will be apparent, however, that elastic bands or any suitable means may be employed for connecting the book-mark with the back or cover of the book.
Having fully described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1 1. A book-mark composed of front and back parts, the front part being provided with a central opening around which are arranged in a circle a plurality of series of numerals,
extend beneath the front part at the perimeter of said opening, substantially as shown and described.
2. A book-mark composed of front and back parts, the front part being provided with a central opening around which are arranged in a circle a plurality of series of numerals and a number of pointers pivoted to the back part at the center of said opening and adapted to operate in connection with said series of numerals, the back part being also provided with keepers and oppositely-movable slides mounted therein whereby the mark may be connected with the back of a book, substantially as shown and described.
3. A book-mark comprising a plate composed of two separate members, the front member being provided with a central opening around which are arranged a plurality of series of numerals beginning with the nu meral 1 and pointers pivoted to the back plate at the center of said opening, said pointers being provided with pointed ends which project beneath the supplemental plate, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing-"witnesses, this 30th day of August, 1902.
JOHN L. THOMPSON.
