SNELL-HOOK BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 674,984, dated May 28, 1901.
Application filed November 5. 1900. Serial No. 35,464. (No model.)
To @ZZ 2072.077@ it indy 00h/007%:
Be it known that I, GARDNER L. PLUMLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snell-Hook Books, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to holders for snell fly iish-hooks; and one object thereof is to provide an improved holder of this class which is in the form of a book and which is preferably provided with two leaves, but may have any desired number of leaves, a further oloject being to provide a snell-fly-hook holder of the class described which is simple in construction and operation and which is designed to receive a large number of hooks, in proportion to the number of leaves employed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, and in which- Figure lis a plan view showing my improved hook-holder open; Fig. 2, a transverse section on the line 2 2 of Fig. l and showing the leaves folded togetherand in an upright position and the back or cover of the book extended; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. l; Fig. 4E, a section on the line4E 4 of Fig. l; and Fig. 5, a detail of the construction as shown in Fig. l, showing modication.
In the practice of my invention, as shown in the drawings, I provide a book with two leaves 7 and a back 8, and the back 8 is provided all around with an extension 9 and at one side with an extended flap lO, which is of a width equal to the thickness of the book, and said extension-flap l0 is provided with a supplementary flap ll.
The back 8 is preferablycomposed of leather, and the leaves 7 are preferably composed of thin aluminium or other metal, but may be composed of any desired material, and each leaf is provided centrally thereof and on each side thereof with a transverse rod or bar 12, (shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2,) and these rods or bars are provided with stationary end supports 13, which are secured to the leaves, and mounted on said rods or bars are movable blocks le, between which are placed springs 15, which operate to force said blocks together. The blocks 14 are designed to hold the snells of the hooks, and this construction is the same as that described in United States Letters Patent No. 657,786, granted to me September 1l, 1900, and forms no part of this invention.
At each end of each of the leaves 7 and on each side thereof is a transverse strip or bar 16, composed of metal, and to these strips or bars are secured hooks 17, with which in practice the ily-hooks are connected, and in Fig. l I have shown two fly-hooks 18, having snells 19, and in practice the fly-hooks are connected with the hooks 17, as shown, and the snells are passed between the blocks 14, where they are held by friction.
The central portion of the cover 8 is preferably cut out at each end, as shown at 20, and in practice I connect the leaves 7 with the central portion of the back 8 b v a hinge consisting of three parts-a central plate 2l, secured to the back or cover of the book, centrally thereof, and the two side plates 23, which are hinged to the plate 22 at 24e-and in the construction shown in Fig. l the side portions 23 of the hinge are formed integrally with an extension 25 of the bars or strips 16, which are secured to the inner sides of the leaves 7 and said side portions 22 of the hinge extend outwardly at an angle to the extension 25 of the strips or bars 16.
By means of this construction the leaves 7 may be opened horizontally, as shown in Fig. l, or closed together in an upright position, as shown in Fig. 2, and in this position they form a compact book, and the corners of the leaves 7 when two leaves only are employed are preferably provided with blocks 2G, which make the thickness of the book at the corners the same as at the middle, where the blocks 14 are placed.
When constructed as shown in Fig. l, it will be seen that the side portions of the hinges are formed integrally with the transverse strips or bars 16; but in Fig. 5 I have shown a construction in which the side portions and the hinges are formed integrally with separate plates 27, which are secured to the leaves 7, andthe central plate 2l of the hinges is the same as in Fig. l; but in both forms of construction the side portions 23 of IOO the hinges project outwardly and the points are connected, are outside of the vertical line or plane of the outer side of the leaves when the latter are folded into a vertical position, as shown in Fig. 2.
By means of this construction I provide a snell-hook book Which is simple in construction and operation and which Will hold a large number of hooks, in proportion 'to Ithe size of the book, and it Will be apparent that any desired number of the blocks 14 may be employed and also of the hooks 17.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl 1. A snell-hook book comprising a flexible back or cover, and a plurality of leaves secured thereto longitudinally of the center back or cover and a plurality of leaves se-A cured to the back or cover centrally thereof, and by means of hinges consisting of three parts, the central part being secured to the back or' cover and the side portions being formed integrally With and at an angle to transverse strips or bars secu red to the leaves, substantially as shown and described.
3. A snell-hook book, comprising a dexible back or cover and a plurality of leaves secured to the back or cover centrally thereof, and by means of hinges consisting of three parts, the central part being secured to the back or cover and the side portions being formed integrally with and at an angle to transverse strips or bars secured to the leaves, said leaves being also provided with devices for holding snell hooks, substantially a shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two subscribing Witnesses, this 2d day of November, 1900.
GARDNER L. PLUMLEY.
