Description

A. ZERBAN. Sample-Gard.
No. 202,210. Patented Apri|9,187,8,.
WITNBSSE%/ 7 rmiugiy I v 7 BY I ATTOR S.
N. PETERS, PPQOTO LITHOGRAPHEE WASHINGTON. D C. A
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
ANDREW ZERBAN, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
lM PROVEIVl ENT IN SAM PLE-CARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 202,210, dated April 9, 1878; application filed February '7, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW ZERBAN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Sample-Gard, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide an improved sample card for exchanging, arranging, and exhibiting samples of silk of various shades,.in order to facilitate the arran gement together of the most suitable colors for effecting harmony and pleasing contrast in setting patterns for silk-weaving, and which may be used also for changing, holding, and exhibiting samples of buttons, jewelry, lace, and various other articles of manufacture.
Heretofore samples of silk have been pasted or otherwise permanently attached to the card, thus making it impossible to rearrange their positions for observing the effect of newly-suggested combinations for colored patterns. As a consequence the appearance of the goods, when ready, often disappoints the exlpectation, and the goods have to be sold at a oss.
Itis therefore desirable that the cards should be so constructed as to allow of the samples being removed and exchanged when required. This is accomplished by my present invention, which consists in a sample-card provided with one or more hinged slats actuated bya spring or springs to clamp and hold one or both of two opposite edges of the sample; and in the combination, in a sample-card, of two oppositely-placed bars, one of which is provided with a series of sockets, and the other with corresponding recesses with a hinged slat and elastic band or spring, as will be hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a face view of my improved sampleholder, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a crosssection of the same, taken on the line a; x of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
A are cards of pasteboard or other material, two or more of which may be connected together by a flexible band or strip, a, in order that they may be folded up together and carried in the pocket, if desired. B and G are two parallel bars or strips attached to the card A at a distance from each other, the former being provided with a series of sockets, b, and the latter with a series of recesses, 0, arranged opposite to and in pairs with the said sockets.
D is a slat hinged to the bar 0 bya flexible strip, cl, in such a manner that, when one or more little panels, E, covered with silk of 7 various shades, are inserted with one end in the sockets b, and pressed down with the other end into the corresponding opposite recess c, the hinged slat may be closed to cover all the recesses c at the same time, and thus confine the panels E in their places. The slot D is held secure in either position of closed or open by a spring or an elastic band, F, stretched over the slat D and secured by glue between the bar 0 and the card A, or by some other mode of fastening. By opening the slat D against the pressure of the springs F, and turning it on its hinge cl, clear of the panels E, the latter may be easily removed and replaced by other panels.
When buttons, jewelry, lace, or other articles mounted on separate cards G are to be inserted in the sample card A, the latter should be provided with a series of teeth or points, H, for perforating the edges of the cards G and preventing them from slipping out of place.
The points H take the place of the sockets and recesses previously described, as the varying sizes of the cards G do not admit of their insertion in the recesses and sockets c b.
The slats D (exactly similar to D) cover, when closed, the points H and the edges of the cards G, and hold them by the elastic strength of the springs F.
I do not limit myself to the exact form of any of the parts here shown, as they may be varied without departing from my invention.
Having thus fully described my inven-- tion, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1'. The combination, in a sample-card, of
the strips B G D, the sockets b and recesses the hinged slat D and elastic band or spring 0 being provided, as and for the purpose de- F, substantially as and for the purpose speci scribed. v fled.
2. The combination, in a sample-card, of ANDREW ZERBAN. two oppositely-placed bars, B 0, one of which Witnesses: is provided with a series of sockets b, and A. W. ALMQVIST,
the other with corresponding recesses c, with (J. SEDGWIOK.
