B.U.CUENY. I
ALBUM 0R HOLDER FOR PHOTOGRAPHS.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE WI 1921- 1,415,429, Patented May 9, 1922.
ATTORNEYS BENJAMIN U. CUENY, or SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS; AssreNon To. TALBER- PRANG- ART CO.,' OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, A; CORPORATION 01E MASSACHUSETTS.
ALBUM on'rronnnn ronrnorocnerns. 7,
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN U. CU'E Y,
.citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Albums or Holders for Photo raphs, ofv which the following is a specification.
Thepresent invention relates to albums or display holders for photographs or the like and has for its object to provide certain new and useful improvements in devices of this character.
The invention consists in the novel and improved construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification.
In the drawings- Fig. 1 isa perspective viewof an album or holder embodying the present invention in what is now considered to be its preferred form, the album being shown with its covers .closed and standing in upright position.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentarycross-sectional view of the album in partially open condition.
As shown in the drawings, the album or display holder comprises a plurality of leaves 3, a binder 4 for the leaves, and a pair of covers 5 which are hinged together as indicated at 6, and to which the binder 4 is securely fastened.
The leaves 3 are adapted to receive the photographs or other display matter. To this end the leaves may be slotted or otherwise constructed to detachably receive the photographs or, if desired, plain leaves may be provided and the photographs pasted thereon.
The binder. 4 is of the expansible type and consists of a plaited sheet of cloth or similar material. The leaves 3 are glued or otherwise suitably secured to the binder 4, one leaf having its inner edge portion. secured to one of the folds of each plait of the binder, as shown in Fig. 2.
The covers 5 maybe composed of any suitable stiff material. As shown, each cover 5 consists of a rectangular wooden frame 7 Specificationnf Letters Patent.
having its inner edge faces rabbeted to receive the marginal portions of a relatively thinpanel' 8 constituting the body portion of the cover. The size of the'frame's'f and the, relatlve arrangement of the "panels and .suchamanner as to permit'the'clos'ing of the covers 5 untilthe opposed sides of the frames 7 are brought into engagement with Patented-May 9511922. each other as shown in Fig. 1. The p1aitedbinder 4 is arranged adjacent the hinged edges of the covers 5 and the opposite ends of the binder are firmly secured to the inclosing sides of the panels 8.. The recesses 9 are of sufiicient size and depth to readily receive the leaves 3 and when'the covers are closed, the leaves together with the photographs mounted thereon, lie entirely within 1 said recesses, and the covers are permitted to close tightly together so that the edges of the leaves will be entirely surrounded by the frames 7. In this way, when the covers are closed the album leaves and the photographs are protected from dust and-injury. The construction .of the binding 4 and the manner in which it is secured-to the covers 5 permit the latter to be readily opened as wide as desired without in any way weakening the binding. Suitable inter-engaging clasp members 10 may be provided on the frames 7 to hold the covers closed."
The covers 5 may, embody various ornacovers may bear appropriate pictures,
ymental designs, and either or both of-the legends, or display matter more or less sug-; f
gestive or descriptive of the photographs or other material mounted upon the leaves of the album. I v j The particular construction and arrangement of the covers above described is such that when the album is closed it bears little resemblance toan album of the ordinary type inasmuch as the leaves thereof are not visible but are entirely enclosed and protected within a chamber formed by the conjunction of the recessed portions 9 of the covers. When closed, however, the illus- In order that the album may be supported in upright position, after the manner of a framed photograph, each cover 5 is provided with a pedestal 11 preferably of greater width than the frame. By means of the pedestals 11 the album may be conveniently supported inupright position whether the covers are open or closed.
It will be appreciated that the present invention is capable of embodiment in albums or holders of a wide variety of ornamental designs whereby the albums may be made unusually attractive in appearance and, if desired, more or less suggestive of the class of matter contained therein. It should also be understood that while it is preferred to employ the specific construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, such construction is not essential except so far as defined in the claim and may be variously changed or modified without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is 2-- A display album having, in combination, a plurality of leaves, a pair of covers comprising rectangular frames hinged together and having panels fitted therein to provide located beneath. the lower side of each frame for firmly supporting the album in upright position whet-her the same be opened or closed, and a clasp for positively securing the covers in closed position.
In testimony'whereo'f I have ailixed my signature.
BENJAMIN U. OUENY.
