INVENTOI? v Wi'llz'am Box I ATTORNEYS WITNESSES. I I 2 a. 5 mm w UNITED STATES Patented May 24, 1904 WILLIAM BOX, OF YANKTON, SOUTH DAKOTA.
DOOR-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 760,951, dated May 24,- 1904. Application filed January 15, 1904. Serial No. 189,129. (N0 mOdQL) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM Box, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Yankton, in the county of Yankton and State of South Dakota, have invented a new and Improved Door-Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in door-fasteners, an object being to provide a door-fastener of novel construction that may be readily carried in a persons pocket or baggage and that may be quickly applied to a car to fasten a door the lock or other fastening device of which may have become defective or wholly omitted.
I will describe a door-fastener embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a door-- fastener embodying my invention, illustrating the same as applied. Fig. 2 is a section of the fastener on the line 22 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a longitudinal section showing the fastener in closed position, and Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, designates the main locking-plate, which at one end is provided with prongs 11,designed to be forced into the jamb of a door-casing, as will be hereinafter described. On its opposite edges the plate 10 has a series of teeth 12, and the body of the plate is provided with a longitudinal slot 13. Loosely mounted on the plate 10 and also provided with a longitudinal slot is a supplemental plate 14. Adjustable on the opposite sides of the plates 10 and 1 1 are stop-plates 16. The stop-plate 15 has a curved head 17, while the plate 16 has a similar curved head 18; but at the ends of this head 18 are lugs 19 for engaging with the teeth 12. The
' plate 15 has a longitudinal slot 20, and a locking-bolt 21 passes through said slot and also through the slots in the plates l0 and 14 and through an opening in the plate 16. Engaging with the bolt 21 at one end is a thumbnut 22, and the opposite end is provided with a finger-piece 23.
In operation the abutments are tobe moved back or swung to one side, and while the door is open the pronged end of the plate 10 is to be passed inward for a short distance against the jamb of the door, and then upon closing the door the prongsll will be forced into the jamb. After this the abutments may move upward to,engage one with the door and the other with the door-casing. Before securing the same by the bolt and nut, however, the plate 16 is to be slightly swung to engage one of its lugs 19 with a tooth 12, thus preventing any outward movement of the plates should pressure be applied to the door on the outer side. Of course after adjusting the parts the thumb-nut is to be tightened onthe screw. When not in use. the abutments may be moved forward and engage over the end of the plates 10 and 14, thus forminga guard over the .prongs 11, so that the device may be conveniently carried in ones pocket or in connection with baggage without danger of tearing the same. Should the door he shrunken or should there be aconsiderable distance between the edge of the door and the jamb, a piece of cardboard or the like may be inserted between the plates 10 and 14, thus obviously thickening the parts, so that the door may force the lugs into the jamb.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A door-fastener comprising a plate having prongs extended at an angle therefrom at one end, abutments slidable along said plate and having curved head portions adapted to engage over and inclose said prongs, and means for clamping the abutments on the plate.
2. A door-fastener comprising a longitudinally-slotted plate having prongs extended at an angle therefrom at one end, a supplemental to this specification in the presence of two subslotted plate slidable on the first-named plate, scribing Witnesses. abutments having curved head portions for engaging over said prongs, and a clamping- 5 bolt passing through said abutments and Witnesses:
through the slots of the. tWo plates. S. A. BOYLES, In testimony whereof I have signed my name J. C. BOYLES.
