POCKET-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 757,7 55, dated April 19, 1904.
Application filed December 26, 1902. Serial No. 135,519. (No model.) 7
Improvement in Pocket-Books, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in pocket-books, and has for its object to provide a pocket-book having a pocket therein, a folding frame for the mouth of the pocket, a flap inclosing the frame, means for securing the flap in its closed position, and a suspension device-such, for instance, as a chain secured to the framefor utilizing the pocket-book as a wrist or hand bag.
A further object is to provide a device of the above character which will obviate the danger arising from losing articles from within the pocket if the frame should not be securely closed, the flap in the present instance which incloses the frame and is secured to the side of the frame serving to retain the articles within the pocket even should-the frame become unfastened.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view of the pocket-book in front elevation with the parts in their closed position, a portion of the suspension device being broken away. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan-view of the pocketbook with the flap unfolded for gaining access to the pocket, and Fig. 4: is an end view of the same. v
The pocket-book is denoted as a whole by 1 and is provided with a pocket 2 for receiving and retaining money and other articles. The mouth of the pocket is opened and closed by the usual folding frame, the members of which are denoted by 3 and 4;, which frame is hinged at itsbottoin, .as shown at 5, and is provided with a suitable fastening device 6 at its 8 and 9 of which are secured to eyes 10, (one only of which is shown herein.) carried by one of the frame members, in the present instance the frame member 4, near its top. These eyes 10 may be formed integral with the frame member or permanently secured thereto, as may be desired.
To prevent losing money or' articles from the pocket f the pocket-book by the unintentional opening of the same while being carried, I provide the pocket-book 1 with a flap 11, which projects from the body portion of the pocket-book at one side of the pocket 2. This flap is sufiiciently long to be folded over for inclosing the frame 3 4 of the pocket and is secured in its closed position, in. the present instance, by means of a flap 12, having a suitable fastening-socket 13, fitted to engage a'stud 14 on the exterior of the said flap. I
By the use of a suspension device in connection with a pocket-book, as above described, I am enabled to utilize the book as a hand or wrist bag and at the same time retain all the advantages of the ordinary pocket-book.
It is to be understood that this pocket-book may be provided with other pockets than the pocket 2, and it is evident that changes might be resorted 'to in the construction, form, and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the structure herein set forth; but What I claim is 1 A pocket-book comprising a body portion having a pocket therein, a frame having two hinged members for closing the pocket, a flap projecting from the body portion and fitted to fold over the top of the frame into proximity to the body portion, a second flap projecting over the body portion in position to be secured to the first-named flap, anda suspension-chain having its ends attached to the outer portions of one of the frame members only.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 22d day of December, A. D. 1902.
