TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JQE. MILLIKEN, of Bridgeton, in the county of Cumberland, and-State of Maine, have invented a new and improved Bedstead-Fastening; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and'exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved method of securing the rails to the posts of bedsteads, whereby they are more easily taken apart or moved, and whereby they are-rendered'more secure.
It consists of a metallic hinge attached to the side-rail of the bedstead, the pivot of which said'hingemay be easily removed, upon which said pivot the post is turned up upon the side-rail; and it consists also of a hook and staples, by means of which said post is secured to said rail in an upright position.
The drawing represents an inside view of one corner of a bedstead, showing one post'and a broken section of one side-rail; showing also the hinge and hook, the post when folded upon the rail being shown in red lines.
A is a bed-post; B is a side-rail; E is a section of an end-rail; G is the hinge; P isthe hinge-pivot; a, is a lip on the hinge 0, upon which therail B rests; H is the hook, by means of-whioh postA is secured to rail B in an upright position; a are staples; S are screws, securing hinge to post A and rail B. The bed-post A is made in any form. The hinge Ois made ofiron or other suitable metal, and of suiiicient size for strength, and
is provided witha loose pivot, having an eye uponone end of said pivot, whereby the same may be easily removed. Said hinge O is also provided with a projection or lip, a, as shown in the drawing, upon which the end of the rail B rests on its under side when the bedstead is in position for use,-as shown. The hinge G is composed of parts of unequal length. The longer part, having thelip a, is secured to the post A by the screws S, and the shorter part is'secured to the end of the rail B,also, by screws not shown in the drawing. To the lower part of the post A, and on a side of the same towards the rail B, is secured a staple, a; and to the under side of the rail B, at a convenient distance fromthe post A, is another staple, a. In the staple ql is secured, by an eye in one end of the hook, a hook, H, in the ordinary form, which, engaging in the staple d holds the postA in an upright or vertical position, as shown in the drawing.- p
By disengaging the hook H from the staple a the post A may be turned up or folded upon the .rail B, as shown in red lines in the drawing. 7
By disengaging the hook H from the staple a and withdrawing the pivot P, which is provided with a handle for that purpose, the two parts of the hinge-Omay be separated, and the bedstead taken down.
The rail E is not connected with the post A, as in bedsteads now in use, but is mortised into one end ofthe rail B, as shown in the drawing, so that the rails B and E, and the bedding contained within the same, may be easily detached from the post A, as above described, without disturbing the said bedding.
The-operation is readily seen from the drawing.
- Constructed as above described, it constitutes a secure and convenient bedstead-fastcning, superior to the screw-bolts or clutches now in common use, whereby a bedstead may be easily taken down or moved.
I-claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The hinge C, constructed as described, its leaves pivoted together at their upper ends, Po'ne leaf ex tending across the edge of the rail B, and beneath it, and fitting at its angle upon the shoulder a of the vertical leaf secured to the post A, all arranged as described, whereby the-post A is adapted to swing up or down upon the pivot P, as and for the purpose specified.
J. E. MILLIKEN.
