-COMB!NED MATCH-BOX AND GIGAR-SUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 752,130, dated February 16, 1904.
Application and February 5, 1903. Serial in. 142,658.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK H. VIGK, Jr.. a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York,
have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Match-Box and Cigar-Cutter, of which the'fol-lowing is a specification.
' This invention relates to an improvement in combined match-boxes and cigar-cutters, and
lo has for one of its objects the production of a simple and etficient device of this character in which the cut is effected by the closing of the box-cover and in which that portion of the head ofthe cigar-cut off is prevented fromfallthe box.
Withthis and other objects in view the invention consists in certain combinations and constructions, as will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically pointed out in the 29 claims hereunto. appended.
In the accompanying drawings, which form 'apartofthis specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate the same parts, Figural is a side elevation of a device constructed in accordance with the invention and showing the box open; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the deviceshown in Fig. 1,- but with the box closed.
Referring tothe drawings, 3 indicates a 3 receptacle for matches or other articles. This receptacle may be of any suitable form, but,
as shown, is of the type usually found in match-boxes designed to be carried in a pocket. As shown, the receptacle 3 is provided witha held in open or closed position by means of a spring 5 in the usual manner.
The receptacle-3 and the cover 4; are each provided on one of their respective walls with edge, -the edges cooperating during the closure of the box to sever an article placed between them. While these edges may .be formed by beveling the walls,'the coverwall closing down outside of the-receptacle, as
shown, I prefer to form the cutting edge on the (Ila model.)
of metal 6. secured to the inside of the receptaole-wall, and by bereling the wall of the cover,
so that during the closure of the box a shearing cut is produced and the outside of the cover and of the receptacle lie in the same plane.
In some cases it has crating curved cutting edges produce a cleaner out than the straight type and do not injure the cigar Wrapper. Preferably, therefore, the receptacle 3 is provided with a cutting edge curved at 7 and the cover 4 is provided with a cutting edge curved at 8.
. It is desirable that the head cut oii the cigar fall outside the box. in the present construction this is eiiected by placing the cigar across the open mouth of-the receptacle so that the head protrudes beyond the cutting edges. As shown, the receptacle 3 is provided with a recess 9 in the wall opposite that carrying the cutting edge. Similarly the cover 4: is pro vided with a recess '10 in the wall oppbsite that carrying its cutting edge. These recesses are arranged to register when the box is closed, thus forming an aperture in which the cigar lies during the cutting operation and 7 through which the cigar may be withdrawn after the cutting has been effected, as is clearly illustrated in Fig. 52.
It is to be understood that the invention is not to belirnited to the precise construction shown, as the construction may be varied without departing from the invention.
hat is claimed is 1. The combination with a match-receptacle having a cutting member formed on the edge of one of its walls and a recess in the opposite wall, of a hinged cover having a cutting edge on one of its walls anda recess in its opposite wall, said cutting edge cooperating with said cutting member to sever an article resting in said recesses and lying across said walls of said receptacle.
2. The combination with a match-receptacle having a'curved. cutting member on one of its been found that coophinged cover having a curved cutting edge on to this specification in the presence of two suboneilof its walls mg a recess in its opfosite scribing witnesses. wa sai cuttin e 'e 006 eratin Wit 1 saic T 7 1- cutting IDGmbBI' tO ssverar l article resting in F'RAlNh 5 said recesses and lying across said walls of said Witnesses: receptacle. In testimony whereofI have signed my name FRANCIS (JARSON.
