UNITED STATES PATENTOFFICE. A
GEORGE E. JACKSON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF FORTY-NINE ONE- HUNDREDTHS TO WILLIAM B. EVEANS, OF MONTCLAIB, NEW JERSEY.
CIGARETTE-FORMER.
Application filed July 22, 1919.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. JACKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cigarette-Formers, of.
which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to cigarette formers and seeks for one of its principal objects to provide a device of this character which is of simple construction, employing but few working parts to render it inexpensive of manufacture and production.
Another object of the invention is to provide a cigarette former which may be adapted to tobacco containers now in common use without materially altering the construction of the same.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of the class described including a plunger and nozzle, which when not in active use, may be retracted wholly within the container, in and out of the way position, the said plunger constituting a stopper to prevent spilling of the contents of the container.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of the class described comprising a plunger having a manipulating portion extending through the container and provided with means adapted to co-act with the nozzle to initially move the same to its active position.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts more fully described and pointed out in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being, understood, however, that no limitations are made to the precise details of construction herein exhibited, but that changes and alterations falling within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tobacco container with the cigarette former applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction illustrated by the arrows.
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the nozzle projected to its operative position.
Specification of Letters Patent,
Patented May 24, 1921.
Serial No. 312,502.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the slide and nozzle.
Fig. 5 is a similar view of the member, and
Fig. 6 is a detail view of a cigarette paper used in connection with the former.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference 10 designates a tobacco container which is here illustrated as equipped with a hinged cover 11, the same being provided with an opening 12 in one of its side flanges and having its top wall slotted as at 13. The cigarette former comprises a slide 14 provided at one of its ends with a cylindrical nozzle 15, and movably mountedwith- 1n the cover 11 by means of the lugs 16 as clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 ofthe drawings. The slide is slotted as at 17 and the inner edges of said slotted portions are flanged for the major portion of their length as at 18, the said slotted portion is also provided at its inner end with an up-turned lug 19. A plunger member 20 preferably formed of sheet metal is provided and has formed thereon a plunger arm 21 having at its extremity, an angular head 22, the body portion of the same is slit and turned up to provide a manipulating handle portion 23 which extends through the slot 13 of the cover. The body portion of the plunger member is adapted to reciprocate within the slotted portion 17 of the slide and is retained therein by means of the flanges 18, said slide serving to guide the plunger and maintain the same in constant alinement with the nozzle 15. At the juncture of the plunger arm with the body of the slide, a shoulder 24 is provided which is adapted to co-act with the stop lug 19 to limit the outward movement of the plunger relative to the slide. The inner extremity 25 of the body portion of the plunger member contacts with the flange of the cover 11 when the plunger is retracted to its full extent and the extremity 26 of the slide serves as an abutment to limit the inward movement of the slide and nozzle. By this arrangement it will be seen that when the nozzle has been retracted within the cover it embraces the plunger head, preventing the escape of the contents of the container, the extremity 25 limiting further movement of the plunger in one direction and the abutthe cover to limit the outward movement of the nozzle. V
In use of the device, when it is desired to form a cigarette, a paper such as illustrated in Fig. 6 is arranged with its open end. over the nozzle and the container is then, inverted to cause the contents to gravitate toward the nozzle. The plunger is then reciprocated by means of .the manipulating handle 23 until the desired amount of tobacco has been discharged into the paper; the paper is then removed and a perfect cigarette is formed with the desired degree of compactness to appeal to the smoker. In order to initially project the nozzle from the cover without opening the same, it is only necessary to move the operating handle 23. to its outward limit.
The cigarette paper illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawing is sealed at its longitudinal edges and closed at one end to provide a cylindrical paper and if found desirable the an openin container may be provided atits lower end with a compartment for the reception of a number of papers.
WVhat is claimed as new is I V l. The combination with a tobacco container having an opening therein, of a device for forming a cigarette comprising a nozzle adapted to be projected through said opening and a plunger for forcing thecontents,
of the container through said nozzle,.said nozzle having an extension within the cover which constitutes a stop for limiting the outward movement of the nozzle and serves as a guide for the plunger.
2. The combination with a tobacco container having a'cover member provided with of a device for forming cigarettes comprising a plunger member, a slide having formed thereon a nozzle adapted to be projected through the opening in said cover, a shoulder formed on said slide for limiting the outward movement of the nozzle a flanged slotted portion formed on said slide constituting a guide for said plunger and a lug on said slide serving as a stop for the plunger. I p
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
GEORGE E. JACKSON.
