SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 749,869, dated January 19, 1904. Application filed September 3, 1903. Serial No. 171,761. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM NANCE LEWIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Abingdon, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles; and I do'declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in a spring-handle which is particularly adapted for a brush, broom, or the like, but which may be used for other purposes.

The object of my invention is to provide a device of this character which will be simple in construction, durable in use, very efficient for the purpose intended, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

WVith this and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved springhandle, showing the same applied to a brush. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 1 is a detail view of the spring member. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the attachingbrackets looking toward the inner face of the same.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 denotes my improved spring-handle, which is here shown attached to a brush 2, but which may be used upon other objects. Said handle comprises a stick 3, a spring member 4, and an attaching member or connection 5. Said stick 8, which is preferably of wood and of any desired shape and size, has its lower end screw-threaded, as at 6, into the upper tubular end 7 of the spring member 4. Said tubular end 7 of the spring is composed of a plurality of closely-arranged spiral convolutions, which form a screw-threaded socket in which the end 6 of the stick 3 is secured. The tubular portion 7 of the spring tapers toward its lower end, as shown at 8, and terminates in a straight loop 9, which is in line with the upper end 7. The end of this loop 9 is clamped between a pair of attaching-brackets 10,which are secured to the brush or other object 2. Each of said brackets 10 is right-angular in form, one arm or member 11 of which engages the back of the brush and is provided with an opening 12, through which a screw or other fastening means is passed, and the other 111611111 her or arm 13 of said bracket is formed on its inner face at each edge with ribs or flanges 14, which engage the two sides of the loop to prevent the same from twisting or turning between said brackets. The two brackets are clamped together with the loop between them by forming the members 13 with alining openings l5 and passing a bolt .16 through said openings 15 and the loop and then screwing a nut 17 upon the end of said bolt.

The use of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying draw-- ings. It will be observed-that owing to the connection between the stick and spring the more the stick is turned the tighter the spring will bind the same. It will be further noted that by using the spring-handle upon a brush, as shown in the drawings, the operation of sweeping will be rendered much easier and may be done more thoroughly with less wear upon the carpet and without causing so much dust.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A handle comprising a stick, a coil-spring member attached to said stick and formed with a loop, and attaching means secured to said loop, substantially as described.

2. A handle comprising a stick, a spiralspring member having a tubular socket adapted to be engaged by said stick and a loop, and attaching-brackets secured to said loop, substantially as described.
