UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN S. SMADES, OF SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI.
HOSE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 421,443, dated February 18, 1890.
Application filed July 2, 1888. Serial No. 278,866. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. SMADEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Greene and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoserenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in hose-wrenches, the object of which is to provide a cheap, simple, durable, and convenient device to be used as a hose-wrench, and at the same time one that is easily adjusted to the coupling and when once in place will not drop or fall off. These objects I attain by means of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a view of the eccentric ratchet.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
A represents an ordinary hose-wrench having the under side of the front hole made bell-shaped at B, so that the wrench is easily applied to the coupling. Said front hole is also preferably provided with a set-screw O, which may be used to make the opening smaller when desired. 7
D is an eccentric ratchet made to project into the hole B, so that the harder the wrench is drawn the tighter the ratchet will clasp the projection on the coupling, thus holding it firmly in place, so that the wrench will not fall off. Said ratchet is provided with a thumb-piece E to press down upon in order to loosen the ratchet when it is desired to take it off of the coupling or to put it on.
F is any suitable spring, preferably a spiral spring, and is secured at one end to the wrench, and the other end is secured to the under side of the thumb-piece. Said thumbpiece is provided with a projection 011 its under side to project down into the spring, to assist in keeping it in place when using a spiral spring. Thumb-piece E is preferably provided with a guard or staple which passes over it, and is to prevent the spring F from lifting the thumb-piece too high. Said guard is secured to the wrench on each side of the thumb-piece E. Said thumb-piece is hinged to the wrench by means of a hinged. bolt or pin H, which passes through the wrench and then through the thumb-piece.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The hose Wrench described, having a front opening therein, as described, for the reception of the projection on the coupling, and having an eccentric ratchetsecured on the wrench and projecting into said opening, substantially as described.
2. The hose-Wrench described, having a front opening therein, a thumb-piece E, an eccentric D on the thumb-piece, projecting into said opening, a spring F beneath the thumb-piece, and a support or guard G inclosing it, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN S. SMADES.
Witnesses:
