UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW TITUS, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
MOP-HEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,294, dated April 3, 1883. Application filed January 16, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANDREW TIIUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mop-Heads,ot'whioh the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved construction of mop-head and mop-clamp adapted to operate with the latter for holding a mop, the object being to simpli the construction of this class of domestic uiwisils, reduce the cost thereof, and provide mea s for instantaneously connecting and disconnecting the mop to and from the head.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure I illustrates a mop-head constructed according to my invention. Fig. II is a. top view of the head without the springclamp. Fig. III is a view of the clamp separate from the head.
In the drawings, B is the head, provided with a handle-socket, in which the handle A is secured in any suitable manner. Said head B is provided on its lower edge and ends with a clamp-groove, c, and means, consisting ofa pin, 0, or other suitable construction or device, for adapting said head to have the springclamp d either hooked or pivoted to one end of said head. Thesaidspring-clampd is made from springy wire, intheform shownin Figs. I and III, one end of which is provided with an eye, as shown in Fig. I, or with a hook, h, as in Fig. III, to engage with one end of the head B, or with the pin 0 therein. A bow-handle, n, is formed on one end of said clamp.
The operation of my improvements is as follows: When a mop is to be attached to the head, the clamp d is grasped by the handle a and forced downward, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, far enough to clearit from the head B and permit of placing the mop be tween the latter and said clamp; and when so moved the latter swings, its hooked or piw oted end being in engagement with the end of said head. Themop is then hung upon the clamp d, or placed between the latter and the grooved edge of the head B, and the handle end of the clamp is forced upward against the grooved end of the head, and when so forced said handle end springs in a direction from the handle A of the head until, being carried nearly up to the position shown in Fig. I, said handle snaps by the end of the head, and the mop is held firmly between said clamp and the grooved edge of the head B. The mop is dis engaged by pushing the handle end of the clamp d downward.
What I claim as my invention is The within-described improved mop-l1ead, consisting of the grooved head B and the spring-clamp (I, having thereon a handle, it, and adapted, by means substantially as described, to have one end thereof engage with and swing upon one end of said head, combined and operating substantially as set forth.
ANDREW TI'IUS.
