PATENT OFFICE LILY GREER, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
SAFETY-PIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 737,225, dated August 25, 1903.
Application filed March 31, 1902.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LILY GREEK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful. Device for Holding Wearing-Apparel Together and Supporting the Weight of a Lower Garment, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a device that will hold two or'more garments or parts of garments or wearing-apparel together, particularly the clothing of females,
such as skirts to shirt-waists or any undergarment, and be convenient in attaching, comfortable in wearing, and so small as to cause no inconvenience to the wearer and can be attached and removed instantly, sure to hold fast Without injury to material or to the person. This is accomplished in the deviceherein described, and shown in the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a detailed view of the complete holder. Fig. 2 shows the clasp-blank; Fig. 3, manner of placing guard on pins. Fig. 4 represents portion of skirt with the holder attached. Fig. 5 represents a portion of skirt and shirt-waist with holder pinned thereto, binding both together. Fig. 6 shows shape; of blank for making guard as shown in Fig. 3. Similar letters refer to same parts throughout the several views.
The body of the device or holder is shown at a, which may be constructed of plate metal or round or flat wire with coils b b, of wire or elastic material, to form springs on ends of body or attached thereto at any desirable distance apart. The extension of ends of coils o c, properly pointed, are for the purpose of pins, these to be full length of body, so as to close in clasps. The clasps e e, attached to body at coils and partly to bodycoils and opening on opposite sides, are for holding or looking pins 0 c when closed and shielding points of same from injuring the person. The clasp is formed into a blank by any of the well-known processes in the arts of any thin plate material. Its construction or shape before placed on body is shown at Fig. 2. The upper wing (designated h) is curved over to form hook or catch.
f and 7c show wings or provisions for fas- Serial No. 100.869. (No modeltoning same to body and body-coils, fto be turned from front side around body, closed to coils, and clenched to body on back part .Of clasp. The eye or opening in clasp-blank att' is to allow wire of coil to pass through same, so that the wing of blank may lie between body-coil and pin-coil when attached and enable the end wing 7c to loop on bodycoil, thus preventing end and lateral motion to clasps. insuring firm attachment and positive holding of pins and protection to and from their points. The pins are on a line, but on opposite sides, so as to engage in their respective garments without interference, and so unitethe wearing-apparel on same line and permit all to lie below the pins and the band of the skirt.
The guard d (shown at Fig. 3) and the blank to form same (at Fig. 6) is so shaped that when attached it shall embrace equally on both sides of base of pin and first part of pin-coil, so that when clenched thereto will allow free motion of spring of pin-coil, thus preventing catching or tearing of material by reason of the fabric of garment slipping between base of pin and pin-coil.
Having exhibited-the shapes and manner of construction of the device, its use and utility will be shown. In Fig. t is shown the device or holder adjusted and pinned to skirt at or near seam of band, with the body of the device lying below same. This is best done by closing one pin and then insert open pin into seam of band of skirt and-close same into clasp. Then open or unclasp the other pin,
insert in waist at proper center and height, and close into clasp, as illustrated in Fig. 5, showing attached device lying flat between skirt and shirt-waist and below the waistline. The holder will unite safely and firmly support the garments thus united. By its use the weight of the skirt is removed from the hips to the shoulders, giving free and'easy movements of the person without pressure,
while it holds the waist down at the back of It can be worn without corsets or W If preferred, the device can be at person. bustle.
tached to various garments before they are placed on the person. v
I am aware that prior to my invention numerous devices called safety or toilet pins have been made or described with a single pin-point and a coil or spiral spring at one end and a clasp or shield at the other end of body and in other arrangements with two pin-points variously connected to the body at each end, but so constructed as to open outward from opposite edges or margins of the device for the purpose of uniting two or more thicknesses of material, so as to bind them together, as Well as for other purposes. I therefore do not claim such com binations or constructions; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A safety-pin, composed of a body or shank with a pin member extending from each extremity thereof, integrally connected to the shank by a coil or spiral spring, each coiled so as to produce the pin members on the same margin or edge, but on opposite faces of the device, a clasp or shield attached to each coil and to the shank member, each having an incurvated projection or wing, whereby it is adapted to receive its respective pin-point, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
LILY GREER.
