To ALL wnsoMY 1r MAY-coscienti:
Be it known vthat L LOUIS ELSBERG, o f the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buckles; and I do hereby-declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionthereoi, which will enable those skilled'in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
' The principal objects of this invention arev First, to unite the two loops'of the buckle, the one for the attached strap, and the' other for the bucklingstrap, in suchla manner that traction on them in opposite directions draws the bar of the tongue and the buckling.-
loop into closer contact, and thereby holds the buckling-strap the more firmly. This result is accomplished by the angle which the attachment-loop forms with the plane of the buckling-loop, as welles by the curved form given to the plane of `the whole buckle, the latter possessing the additional advantage ot' adapting it sometimes` to particular uses. Y
Second, to prevent the tearing of the buckling-strap by piercing'it with sharppoints'f, as iri ordinary buckles,
or in most of those heretofore patented, which is accomplished by flattening the bar of the tongueand seri-ating its edge, or, which is equivalent thereto, by making the contact-surfaces of the tongue and buckling-loop with corresponding elevations and depressions. And v i y I Third and last, to cheapeu the manufacture of the buckle, by making both'loops of wire, with the bar-- tongue and attachmentloop of one continuous piece. v
The buckle embraced in the present invention is'formed of three parts, viz, a buckling-loop, an attachmentloop, and a bar-tongue, the buckling-loop being for the buckling-strap vto pass through, the attachment-loop for the attached strap, and the bar-tongue for holding the buckling-strap in position wherewanted. In the accompanying plate of drawings my improvements in buckles are illustrated Figure 1 being a side view of the buckle,`and I Figure 2 a transverse section, taken in the plane of the line a: x, fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parte.
A, in the drawings, represents the buckling-loop ofthe buckle. This loop is made of wire, with its extremities, B, bent at right angles to the middle portion C, which -latter is flattened, with itsedge D yturned upward or raised along its length. E isthe attachment-loop. This loop is made of a piece of wire, havingits 'extremities F either angularly or circularly bent, with a small elbow, G, so that the ends lare opposite and in the' saine direction as the main portion-H. I is the bar-tongue, which, in the presentinstance,l is made of th same piece of wire as the loop E, 'and forms a continuationof its circular-bout ends F, as shown, fhaving its middle portion J' flattened, with its upper edge K 'serrated and turned backward. To unite the buckling-loop tothe attachmenttoop, ifthe latter and the bar-tongue are made ofone continuous piece of wire, the ends of the buckling-loop are bent upon themselves, to form a hook or ey'e, L, for holdingvthe attachment-loop on each side. If the attachmentdoop and bar-tongue are made separate, the bucklingloop may be either formed with eyes, as above described, or simply have holes made through its extremities, to receive 4the circular ends of the attachmentloop, and then to the eyes, or theircquivalents, of the attachment-loop, the bar-tongue, similarly provided with eyes, hung. In either of the above forms of connections'between the attachment aud-buekling-loops a movable joint is fixed.
In making the buckle with ,the loops above'describerhtlic plane ofthe attachmeutdeop is .made to form an obtuse angle with the plane of the tongue, or the whole to form a curve from one side of the" buckle to the other.v
as shown in lig. 2 of the drawings. The elbows at vthe ends of the Aattach'ment-loop may-be dispensed with, and the ends of the buckling-loop bent directly over and around the attachment-loop.. Thecontnct-surface of both the bar-tongue and flattened portion of' the buckling-loop may be formed with corresponding depressions and elevations, if so desired. I
I claim as new, and desire to'secure by Letters Patent- The buckle, constrnctedas described, cpnsisting of the buckling-loop'A, having the flattened centre 0,-and bent edge D, its extremities B bent at right angles to the centre C, forming bearings for the loop E, the latter having the serrated tongue I fitting'bctween the arms B upon the flat surface of the loop A, beneaththe edge D, as herein described, for the purpose specified.
