Description

0536,100. PATENTE AUG. 5, 1852,
' y G. A. MBACHAM.
c SUSPENDEB EASTENING.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE A. MEAGHAM, OE NEW YORK, N. Y.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 36,100, dated August 5, 1362.
i To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, GEORGE A. MEAOHM, of the'city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and valuable Improvement in Attaching Suspenders to Panialoons, applicable also to other purposes; and I do hereby declare that the following specication, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full and exact description thereof, prepared for the purpose of procuring a patent thereon. f
My invention is a peculiar construction of clasp for clasping the waistband of the pantaloons and supporting them without the aid of the buttons usually employed, the clasp being so constructed that while the hold upon the cloth is very firm, the direction of the strain may be varied ata considerable angle without tending to abrade the cloth or to loosen the hold thereon, thereby adapting the fasteningto the movements of the wearer and enabling it. to be attached to any desired part of the waistband without requiring any special care as to the direction in which thestrain is to fall, the clasp adjusting itself to the proper position. This quality of allowing the -xsuspenders to be attached to any point of the waistband is a very valuable one, as a slight change in the position of the point of suspenL sion will sometimes make considerable d'iiference in the set oila vpair ot' pantaloons, and
by my invention this change may be made with ease and facility.
By another pecularity in the construction of my' improved clasp it is adapted to a considerable variation in the thickness of the article clamped therein, whereby it is capable of application to thick and thin pants, and may also be made to support the drawers and pants both. together, ii desired.
To enable others skilled in the art tov make .and use my invention,` I will proceed to dcscribe its construction and operation by the aid of the drawings, in whieh- Figure 1 is a side view of the clasp with u. portion of the waistband.t Fig. 2 is au edge view of the saule. Fig. 3 is a section of a portion showing one manner in which I propose to construct the clasp, and Figs. 4.- and 5 are end of A, I attach a button or washer, B, bya
rivet, b, so that it is free to turn upon the said rivet relatively to A, as shown in 'red linesin Fig. l. These 'buttons or' washers inay be serrated, as represented, to cause them to hold the'cloth-more firmly; but this is not essential. l prefer them struck up in econcave form, as represented, and the rivet may be dispensed with, a 'portion of the l"metal of B serving the purpose tl1ereOf,as shown in Fig. 3.
The sides of A are serrated-or notched, and a baud, C, provided to slip thereon and-con- .ne the clasp in a manner common to articles of this character. Iconstruct-the baud C, however, of an oblong form, as 'shown in Figs. 4 i
and 5, and capable of heilig turned, soasvto .confine the buttons B at a greater or less distance apart.. By means of this band G, and the ordinary adjustment due to the inclined position of the sides ofA, I am enabled to adjust the distance between the buttons B and the strain thereon to suit all the variations in the thicknessA of the goods which -occurjin practice.
The clamp, as here described, o-rtwo orln-ore of them, are attached by means of a ring, D, to the Suspenders, and the. operationl of attaching them to the pants is too obvious to require vfurther description. The clasp .may be connected to the suspeudei shy meausofahook,
if desired, to avoid the necessity of detachiug the clasp when uudrcssiug,4ihe latter remaining ou the waistband. p
It will be observed that whatever changes may be induced in the direct-ion ot' the strain upon A, by reason of the motion otf the wearer or other cause, the relation between. the cloth and the buttons B renin-ius the saine, and the former is subjected to no abrasion bysuch the supporting part A to rotate or turn rela.- motion. Vere the connection ofthe clasp to tively thereto, substantially as and for the the cloth rigid, the variations in the strain, purpose herein described. which are constantly occuring, would.soon l 2. The oblong band C, in combination with loosen the hold of the clasp or tear the cloth. the clasp A, substantiallyas and for the pur- Having now fully described-my said inveupose herein set forth. tion, what I claim as new therein, and desire GEO. A. MEAOHAM. to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The employment, in clasps, of the buttons B, or their equivalents, so arranged as to allow Witnesses:
