HENRY'LUMBARD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASS IGNOR TO HIMSELF, GEORGE E. GERTS, AND JOHN SCHMIDT, THE SAME PLACE Le ttizrs' Patent No. 73,107, ated January 7; 1868.
IMPROVED BROOM.
71th tlgttult marsh in iitflgtn ittttets Want ant matingtnrt at 1132 same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, HENRY LUMBARD, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Street: or Stable-Brooms; and I do hereby declare that thefollom ing is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in whieh Figure 1 is the elevation of the brush,
Figure 2 is the section of the block, and
Figure 3 is the-end elevation of the block.
The object of my invention is to secure the reed, cane, bass, rattan, or any other suitable substances, that can be conveniently used for street or stable-brooms, in the block in a perfect-manner, as will be hereinafter fully explained.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. v
One, two, or more grooves, a a, with bottom of a semicircular shape, are made in the block A,'and the' reeds, done, or other suitable substances are passed over the wedges B B, arrangedso as to fit thegrooves a a, and the wedges, with the reeds on them, are driven tight into the grooves, two or more rivets, C C, passing through the block A and the wedges B B, thus securing these to the block. Beside these, there are screws or nails driven through said wedges into the block.
To render the block capable to withstand wear and tear, metallic plates D D are put at its ends, with flaps covering the sharp angles, and the whole being sccurly fastened to the block. is a. handle.
It is evident that it is impossible for the reeds ofthis broom to fall oht, as is often thecasewith ordinary brooms, in which reeds are put in bunches into the block and secured-by cement only. Here the reeds may break off, but not drop out.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Thearrangemcnt of the rcedson the wedges B B, and the manner of securing them to the block A by means of said wedges, substantially as and in the manner herein set forth. I
Incombination with the above, I- claim the rivets C C and plates D D, arranged as-described and specified.
' HENRY LUMBARD.
