IMPROVED BACK FOR BRUSHES.
The Schedule'rferr-ed to in these Letters Patent and making part o! the same.
To all whom it may concern v i Be it known that I, W. U. DUDLEY, of Port Rich- Brushes; and I do berebydeclare that the following vis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which, will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the yaccompanying drawings, forming part of this specicatiomin-which the gure represents a back view of my improved brush, parts being 4'broken away to show the const rnction. i
Similar letters of reference represent corresponding parts. V
My invention has for its object to improve the construction of brushes, so that the `brush may be wet without injuring the veneeringor cover of its back, and so that the body of the brush may be removed when worn out, and replaced bya new one; and
It consists in securing 'the back, body, and handle of the brush together, by means of a metallic band or frame, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents the body oi' the brush, to which4 thebristles u.' are attached in the ordinary manner.
B is the back of the brush, which, instead of being glued, or otherwise permanently attached to the body A, is laid loosely upon it, and is secured 'in place by the band or frame O.
rIhe frame C is made of metal, and of such a form as to correspond in shape with' the shape of the body and back of the brush to which it is to be applied..
The frame O is grooved, or struck up so as to form a. recess or channel to receive the edges of the body and back of the brush, which edges may be bevelled off, if desired or necessary.
The frame O is open at the end to which the handle F is attached, and is made with a tang, c', upon each end, which tangs enter the handle F. C
The tangs c may have a screw-thread cut upon them, to screw into the handle F, or into a socket or nut let into said handle; or they may be made long, so as to pass entirely through said handle, and be secured by a nut screwing upon their projecting ends; or the tangs c may be so formed as to clasp the base, or inner end of the handle F, to which they may be secured by screws or other convenientmeans.
It' desired or thought necessary, the frame O may be jointed opposite to the tangs c', 'as shown iu. the drawings; but this will scarcely ever be required, as the frame, in ordinary cases, can be easily sprung into place. 4
Having thus described my invention,
'What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Lety ters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, the toilet-brush having the back B and the body A, carrying the bristies a', secured together by means of the struck-np metallic band C, hinged together at one end, and with its tangs c adapted to screw into the handle F at the opposite end, as herein shown and described, for the purpose specied.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 14th dajT of April, 1869.
Witnesses: W. U. DUDLEY.
