SHOE-BRUSH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,633, dated February 23, 1892.

Be it known that I, MoEToN A.. GOODMAN.A

of Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Brushes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

In the manufacture of shoe-brushes it is customary to cover the back ot' the brush into which the bristles are inserted with a veneer of wood, which is either glued or tacked thereon iu order to give the brush a nice finish. From a variety of causes this veneer frequently becomes detached, thus spoiling the brush before it becomes worn out. My iuveution is designed to remedythis defect and otherwise improve the construction of brushes of this class, at the same time reducing the cost of their manufacture; audit consists in the several details of construction and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter fully set forth in the specification and pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved brush. Fig. 2 is a vertica-l transverse section ou the line ce, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the metal cover detached, partly in section.

A represents the brush proper, B the handle, and O the dauber, all secured together in the ordinary manner by the screw b, which A passes through the handle into the back of the brush A, and another screw (not shown) which passesvthrough the back of the dauber O and the end of the handle B into the back of the brush A. The bristles ct are inserted iu and secured to the wooden back c in the usual manner. Instead, however,'of using a veneer of wood to cover and protect the securing devices I employ a metal cover D. This cover is of one piece and shaped by suitable dies to form a pocket, into which the wooden back c lits snugly. The blanks from which the covers D are formed are provided on opposite sides with extensions d d,which, when the wooden back ct is within the cover, are bent over onto the outer face of the wooden back and securely hold it in place. These extensions are best seen in Figs. 2 and 3. The cover D is also provided with two ribs d d', which project outwardly therefrom in such position as to engage the opposite sides of the handle B and hold it against lateral movement, thereby relieving the strain ou the screw b to a great extent and so preventing the handle from becoming loose. The cover is also provided with a hole d2 for the passage of the screw h. The ribs d and hole d2 may be formed simultaneously with the operation of shaping the cover and with the same dies.

I prefer to use Atin as the material from which to construct the covers D, as it can be japanned or otherwise treated to give it a nice appearance and linish. I do not, however, wish to limit myself to the use of such metal, as any other ductile sheet metal could be employed. I have also found that compressed paper-pulp may be advantageously used for the covers. In practice I ind that the metal cover D can be attached to the back of the brush in much less time than is necessary to tack or glue a veneer of wood thereon, and as the metal cover can be produced as cheaply as the veneer the saving of labor reduces materially the cost of producing the brush.

Having described my invention, I claim- In a brush, a back and a metal cover therefor having flanged sides and turned-under edges, the back resting in a pocket iu the cover, said cover having, further, raised ribs upon its top, combined with a handle secured to the back and cover and resting between the ribs of the latter, substantially as set forth.
